Well it happened again. She shot a deer and I didn’t. Next year (I already made up my mind but will break the news to her after season) I’m sitting in her stand while she sleeps in! This guy was lying down on a fence line about 180 yards from her. When we walked in this morning before sun up we spooked a deer from right near her stand. I went into mine, about 100 yards from her though not visible and sat. At 7:03 I heard her shoot. After finishing my morning hunt I went back to her and then to the deer. She said as the sun came up she saw something in the grass but couldn’t tell if was a deer. After a bit she scoped it and determined it was indeed a deer. The rule of the land is no doe harvest until Thanksgiving so she couldn’t shoot until she knew if it was a buck and at that point it was bedded down happily. As the sun changed she thought she saw a glimmer of antler. Jiggling the bolt on the Ruger the deer finally turned towards her and she saw the horns for sure. But he wouldn’t stand up for nothing. Finally she got tired of waiting and set the cross hairs just behind its head and pulled the trigger. It never stood up. When I got to it it was as if it had just fallen asleep. Perfect shot into the spine where it meets the base of the skull. I know some will belly ache about such a shot but too bad. We have very capable weapons and she is a damn good shot. In this specific situation it was shoot or very likely lose the deer if it bolted. She made the right choice.

Good for her. She shot to kill and that’s what happened. How can you ask for anything more than that?

Thanks for the replies all. We do believe in keeping our equipment in perfect shape and we practice shooting as often as possible. I also suspect her dad was a little picky in teaching her to shoot so she knew to either do it right or listen to him rant a bit, lol. Still the situation was right. The deer was not going to take an unsuspected step as they can when on the hoof. The best thing is we have no wasted meat and the horns are not broken.

I hope everyone else had a safe and successful opener as well.

    Nice work and nice shooting!

Having a capable weapon and knowing it’s capabilities is awesome. I have shot my 2 biggest bucks at both over 200 yards in the wind. But, I know my zero, my ballistics tables, and my wind drift charts, so I feel with a rest I am very capable out to 300 or more yards. Long range shooting has become one of my favorite parts of deer season.
