I have a 870 12ga and I am considering putting a scope onto my gun. I am wondering what you all would suggest as a starting place. This is my first gun and would be my first scope.
    Thanks for the help

Yeah, the one I have for sale in the classifieds. Kidding! On a serious note, what type of terrain will you be hunting? Woods? Open fields? I’m partial to Nikon and Leupold, both make great optics.

    Couple ?’s for ya.

Is it a bird barrel or a slug barrel?

Do you still hunt or drive deer?

Basically you are looking at a regular scope or a red dot.

Still hunting you can get buy with either but a regular scope would probably be best.

If you’re driving deer and shooting moving deer a red dot or open sites are going to suit you better.

My dad and I both have Bushnell Banner’s and the have been good for us. They won’t break the bank and seem to work really well. My dad has shot 3 deer in three years with his anywhere from 40 to 90 yards and it has worked great.

I would recommend one, I’m sure the Leupold and Nikon’s are nice but they are also more expensive.

I second the banner. great scope with a great price. even you do make alot of drives, you still have a great great range of view with this scope.

I’m not up on all the shotgun scopes, but one thing I would do is get a scope with a very wide “field of view”.

NO Scope is the only way to go if you have a large hunting group because these deer are going to be moving, and your never gonna find them in that scope. Now if your gonna sit in a stand and wait then a low power scope will work just fine, just make sure its a quality scope…never buy one of those lighted dot scopes they are junk

I have to argue this one with ya! I have an Ultradot on a 870 with a Hastings Barrel. The gun is 15 years old now, and has harvested dozens of deer! I have not touched the zero screws since I put it on! I just shot an 8 point and a doe last weekend with it. In low light, it is FANTASTIC! I prefer it over a scope! You look with BOTH eyes open, so you never lose sight of the animal. Excellent if it is running, which I don’t promote anyway. I have 4 Ultradots on shotguns and my crossbow. I absolutetely LOVE them!

I agree with Wild. I guess it depends on how you are hunting deer but if you have to shoot when the are on the move no scope is the way to go.
