Why never just one shot?

i have to agree w/ steve. Taking out a doe takes out 3 or more deer if you consider the doe and her 1-3 fawns she births in the spring. That is huge if you consider taking 3-4 does a season. With that said, the deer population is decreased by 12 or more by the next year or year after Increasing food for the rest of the heard, decreasing buck to doe ratio and increasing rut activity and growing bigger bucks

Right on ProTour. They are far from equal. You let a buck walk you let one deer walk. You let a doe walk you let a 2-3 deer walk. A doe, a doe fawn and a doe buck walk, by percentages if she is healthy enough to have 2 off spring.

Killing 1 doe eliminates 3 deer? Maybe, not proven. Killing a buck kills one deer? maybe, but bucks are required for mating, so? From what I saw hunting around the state this year, from Sept 13 – yesterday. they (MN DNR) need to review these seasons, and limits again. man there are very few deer over in the 200 zone (old zone 4). and now it’s a 9 day season? I guess we’re trying to eliminate the deer herd not manage it over there. You look at Whitewater, and it is a free for all on bucks, but a lottery for does? Shouldn’t this be flipped around? maybe we need to have a lottery for bucks in certain areas instead? Meat hunters (no offense) shouldn’t care, and would be happy to thin the doe population. Trophy buck hunters should be thrilled at the opportunity to get drawn and shoot a record book class deer. I know the DNR is in a tough position, and everyone will not be happy, but let’s elimate one of these firearms seasons, and have a 7-9 day normal firearms season like every other state. Keep the muzzleloader seasons and archery seasons as they are. just my opinion.

I do agree with killing does for the freezer. In fact I have a rule for the group I hunt with that the only bucks killed are those that will go on the wall. That is unless you have never killed any deer or never got a buck-then shoot it. I just don’t expect the neighboring land owners to do the same as me–as long as they are doing things legal I could care less how they manage their hunts.

DeanoB- Even if buck X gets killed and does not get to breed any does, there is an extremely high chance that a doe in any given area will get bred, even if there was only one buck to 20 does. They’ll come back into heat until they get pregnant.

From what I hear the number of kills are down all over the state, area 200 gets hit hard with large groups doing drives and there is allot of corn that is not out yet, same thing in area 300. Just because you are not seeing deer does not mean they are not over populated my guess is they are hiding out in the corn.

That would cause more problems than it would solve, first you would have way too many hunters in the woods at one time, if you think Whitewater is a free for all now can you imagine how bad it would be if there was only one season and now you have the fist season guys and second season guys all hunting Whitewater at the same time!

The second problem you would have is allot of first season guys would lose hunting land or vise versa. Allot of land owners also hunt themselves and they let others hunt there land during the season they do not hunt, if you go to one season land owners that hunt will not let others hunt there land when they are hunting it themselves.

I agree with steve, one season will only cause more problem. I think that if your talking about number of deer killed, it should be limited to bag limit, which is one buck and that is good. in terms of season, spread it out like how it use to be with sections and different seasons. the same amount of deer is still harvested, but the people can choose when they want to hunt.
