I started deer hunting about 5 years ago and until last year only hunted the muzzle loader season. Last year I decided to give bow hunting a try and instantly loved it. Saturday morning I finally let my first arrow fly. I had a nice 8 pointer come in and walk a trail about 30 yards away. He was hot on the scent of something, I’m assuming a doe or the small 4 pointer that had walked by earlier. I got to full draw and tried to stop him once but he kept going. He got to the next spot I had a good shot at and I got him stopped and let one fly. I heard the arrow hit a small twig and watched it kick straight down and go right under his chest. Bummer. He stayed around for a bit but never gave me another shot. After I shot and he left I could see the twig I hit plain as day, but I never saw it while I was looking through my sight. I am however thankful that the arrow kicked far enough down to be a clean miss rather than wounding this guy. I also saw a nice ten pointer Saturday night but he never gave me a shot as he was hot on a doe and they both bolted when another buck can in to see what was going on. Lots of deer moving out there this weekend and the bucks are really chasing right now. Also, even though my arrow hit a twig I still feel that I made a good shot and that helps build confidence for the next time a big one walks by. Now if only I had bought a gun tag.

Welcome to the sport of bow hunting. The ups and downs are enough to drive you crazy. The same thing happened to me on the first 2 arrows I released about 11 years ago and it just happened to my wife last week. Keep at it and know the ins and outs of your stands and keep mental notes where the shots are clear and not. We all go through it, but that is what keeps us coming back for more! Good Luck!
