Trail Camera Found

Hey guys just wanted to get your thoughts. I was scouting an area and found a trail camera. I talked to the landowner who I have permission from and told him about it. He wasn’t sure who’s it was. I was thinking of leaving a note on it or doing nothing at all. Just want who’s ever it is to know someone is hunting the area. I don’t like it when someone comes up to check it and there I am in a tree or I go to get in the tree and someone is already there. Thoughts?

My thought is, if someone is on the land that isn’t suppose to be there, then I wouldn’t worry about it. Go about your business as if you never saw the camera. You have permission so if you are out hunting and happen to see this person out there, then ask them what they are doing. (Nicely) If they are defensive about it, then take it up with the land owner. Apparently from what you’ve said, this person does not belong there and should take his camera and leave. Maybe you should leave him some photos !!

I would think it would be up to the land owner to do something about it. If someone is trespassing and he don’t care then you may be out of luck. All you could do then is walk by the camera on your way in and out and maybe this person will think he’s been busted and he’ll move on. If you are leasing under a contract it could be a different story depending on your contract.

1st make sure you get written permission from the landowner. Next, leave the guy a note to stay off the property. tell him next time they won’t be so lucky and they will be missing a camera.

I’m a part of the Sauk Rapids Sportsmen’s Club and we have some property that nobody is supposed to be hunting. However, every year there are portable treestands that are found around the property. We remove them every year and have a silent auction for the 1st meeting of the year.

Just an example of what we do when something like that happens to the property.

Thanks I thought about the picture honestly, but figured I will prolly leave a note if it is still there when I go to hunt and purposely walk in front of it. I may already be on camera, who really knows. Thanks again.

I wouldn’t leave a note, I’d write one and the hold it in front of the camera for a picture surprise for the guy.

I was thinking the same thing but it may or may not work depending on how big the print is, might not be able to read the print in the pic. I would play it safe and leave a note. I have done this with tree stands before put the note in a sandwich bag so it does not get wet then poke a zip tie thru the bag and attach it to the camera.

All of thee above are good ideas but I personally would take the camera and give it to the landowner and if they have asked this farmer permission they will have no problem going to him looking for their camera. That way he can take it up with them for being on his land, or at least let them know that you are hunting there and they need to find another place to hunt. I wouldn’t get involved unless you have a written lease.

Who knows, that camera could have been there for years.. Maybe, somebody forgot where they put it ? If it was me, I would check out the cam, batteries, active ??? If it wasn’t, I would hang a note in the bag like Steve says, with my Name and Phone #. Then I would have another camera to scout my area that I have permission to hunt If somebody calls, great, they can explain why they are on land they shouldn’t be, or better yet, nobody calls

I’d leave the camera alone. If the guy isn’t afraid to trespass then he’s probably not afraid to come in and steal your tree stands, your cameras, or even do something to scare off deer that you have worked hard to pattern. I’d get in some of his pics so he knows that someone is aware that he’s in there and maybe he’ll leave peacfully.

    Just my $0.02.
