    Hey guys,

All this wind today has me thinking about how I would dread to be on stand today. It seems year after year I always fail to find spots that are wind protected to capitalize on days like today.

The area i hunt is fairly flat so there are not too many ridges to block out the wind. The only consistent sighting of deer in high winds for me has been from a large stand of pines with some small scrub oaks for cover mixed in.

    Any other suggestions??

I shot my biggest deer in unbelievable winds last year. I was being blown out of my tree so I climbed down in a steep gully and the deer did the same. However, if it is flat by you, then I guess pine trees would be the best option for sitting. Hunting standing corn is great on windy days because the deer can’t hear you stalking with all of the rustling leaves.

Higher sustained winds make hunting certain areas a breeze. Low lying valleys and troughs can be awful hard to hunt with mild to calm winds because they tend to swirl. If it gets to the point the wind is pretty heavy and sustained these normally off limits areas can be pretty productive. As a rule of thumb I don’t like to hunt in winds above 10-15mph because I like to be able to hear things, lol.

Two years ago my brother in law shot his best buck with very high winds. He picked a stand where three valleys meet which we call the bowl. I had to leave my stand early because of the high winds and an hour later he shot a really nice 11 pt.

Amen! 4 years ago, i saw a deer bedded down a corn row and stalked up to 25 yards on him before I put the on him. love that, one of favorite methods of hunting
