Deer rub or not?

I went out this week end to find where i will be hunting in walker MN next week and me and my grandpa and his brother drove thru the land and i saw what looked to be a rub? I had a little debate with my grandpa back at the car what it was. He didn’t get out of the car nor did his brother but they both insisted it was a wood pecker But what i really thought was a rub? So i will describe it to you and you let me know what you think. It was a 1 foot diameter tree and the whole front was gone no questions asked. On both Sides of the tree there was 4 little rubs and they were not deep just no bark and splinters every where. Too me it sounds like a decent 10 pointer and it was no more than 3 hours old. Another reason why i think its a rub is because there is a stream 100 yards away and there’s a small trail that goes down to the stream and back right by this thing. No more then 100 feet away is a more well defined deer trail. This all add up to an old 10 pointer but i wan to know what you think whether i am right or i spend 10 min typing this up to be proven wrong

I don’t think anybody can prove or disprove this. Here is a picture of a rub.

Was the tree dead or alive with leaves? Very seldom will a buck make a rub on a dead tree. I would also think that a woodpecker would work a dead tree over looking for insects inside the rotting wood.
