St. Croix spring bobber rod is almost unbeatable for panfish- That spring sets that rod on a level by itself-

I also LOVE thorne bros rods. It is safe to say I collect them- Length, for walleyes and bigger fish, I like having more rod length to absorb the head shakes. I think it plays them much better than a shorter rod.
Longer length also gives you the ability to stand up instead of kneeling down. You can keep the tip of the rod out of the wind without kneeling down, HUGE bonus in my opinion.

Shorter ice rods, are nice inside the house- it is best to have a good selection of both! The only time I will use a shorter rod, is when forced to do so…

Check out the croix’s and the thorne bros panfish sweetheart!!!
One thing I forgot to add, get a tennessee handle…that allows you to balance the rod better. Avids, legends, and premiers…as well as thorne bros have these handles. Also pick a reel that balances well with the rod- that will allow to detect even the best sniffers!!

What are your guy’s thoughts on the St Croix premier combo’s offered at fleetfarm? I think they are around 35 bucks if I can remember right.

I just picked up a premier 28″ ML for $20 at Mikes in forest lake this afternoon. Is the real Fleet farm putting on them look worth $15.

Cade. What is a short and long rod to you? Hopefully I can see tomorrow how that 28″ premier will work on a big walleye with good head shakes.

Mike, I fished the premier last year. Worked perfectly well pulling in Pike… got it on clearance so didn’t have time to pull any pigs in with it yet. If I see ya out on some lake tomorrow… you can have a closer look at the legends vs the premier. I have both!

I like to stick with the 24″-28″ rods in light action for gills, crappie, and perch. Keep in mind, most of my fishing is from a portable shack.
Call me cheap, but the rods I like the best are the Ice Blues from HT. I have 4 of them and love them.

Mike the croix combos come with their own reel…not the worst reel I have seen for the money, but they certainly arent High end.IMO just fine for pan-fish & perch but I would opt for something a bit better for the trophy fish myself.I really believe the ice-rods line-up have evolved very similar to that of open water rods, specific rods for specific fish and techniques. If you have the need to demo anything….give a shout!

I like to fish frabil panfish poppers..24″ UL has held up to tons of pig gills, 10-12-1/2″ crappies, bass and perch. You can find combos for around 20$$ with this rod, and 10$ for just the rod! Very good deals indeed..I can’t keep track but I think mine is on its 4th season without a single problem. Had to replace the spring a couple times on the top, that’s it. Otherwise, those ice blues are something else. I own a frabil alpine which is a knock off of that, and I use a 30″ deadstick for fishing swedish pimples and forage minnows on big crappies. It works extremely well. Since it is an identicle copy of the HT, Ht’s are great too

Mike, I don’t go any shorter than 24″ and no longer than 30″…28″ is a great all around size for larger panfish and walleyes IMO. Larger panfish would qualify as perch and crappies to me. I have a 28″ light okuma that I picked up from HOF and love it, though I haven’t put it to use yet. It seems like the perfect perch/eye rod..
I have 1 30″er and it’s great for hole hopping with jigging spoons like I mentioned above, but you can be more versitile (inside and outside) with something in the 24-28″ range.
