Im still looking for my buck. Hunting has been good thus far for me, although im not especially fond of hunting in the hot weather that we have been having. Quick recap of my last week of hunting. Friday before the opener, did some scouting on different bean fields and ran into a nice 10 pointer that is maybe right around the 120-125 mark. Nothing huge but very nice. Saturday put a stand up where he was entering the field, but wasn’t able to get on the trail that i wanted, due to lack of sturdy trees. Sure enough around 7:00 out he comes with a gigantic six pointer and antother really nice seven. I was video taping and was able to get some great footage, although he wasn’t coming any closer than 70 yards. When he came out was looking at him, and something wasn’t right and it took me a minute to figure out what. He was still in VELVET. A 3 1/2 year old deer still in velvet. He immediatly went from a possible shooter to a definint shooter. Needless to say it was no go for me to drop the hammer on sat night. Sunday, i hunted on the ground and saw several little bucks but no go on the big guy and i figured i would lose the chance to have a crack at him in velvet. Sunday night i had to go back to school. Tues the wind was right and i was out of class at 2:30 so a buddy and i jumped in the truck and made the quick 50 min drive north. Deer were already in the field by 4;30 when i headed out to the stand. 6:30 came and i looked to my right and there stood a buck just inside the trees. Out he comes and it is the nice 2.5 year old seven pt, at 16 yards. Beautiful deer with great potential, hopefully he lives till next year. Twenty minutes later i see the big six from the other night. His rack is outside of the ears a little bit, and his G-2 is probably 10″ on both sides, so he is a cool looking deer also. Soon after i see the ten pointer back in the brush, working his way towards the field. Sure enough out he comes around 70 yards away, and He is out of VELVET. Rats now he back into the questionable bracket. Needless to say he never gave me a shot opportunity which is hopefully good.

So far the season has been decent. Deer seen so far has been 47, and ive seen seven different bucks out of this one field. Still looking for a big one. Scouting in other fields ive only seen a couple 1.5-2.5 yr old bucks, but the season is young, and should start to only get better.

Good luck to all, stay safe and have fun.

Thanks for the update and it sounds like these bucks are still in bachelor groups. Do you have any cameras out on the property? It may help you find out if there’s a shooter around. Hopefully these bucks will start to break up and a big boy shows up for you!

sounds like a good year thus far!! i agree though a lot of bucks didn’t come out of velvet until later compared to last year. I don’t know if it was cuz of a dry summer I have seen a lot of 1.5-2.5 this season but nothing bigger. We need colder weather
