A 6″ Lazer would be a great choice. I have a 7″ Lazer and it’s plenty for Panfish.

You should do just fine with a 6″.

I like the 6″ hand auger for panfish. Very light, easy drilling new holes with the Lazer auger, and super easy for re-drilling holes.

I’ve got a 6″ Lazer and would most definitely recommend it.

If my math is right (Area= Pi x R squared) then an 8 inch auger removes an area of 50 square inches while a 6 inch auger removes 28 square inches. It’s WAY less work to drill a 6 inch hole. I cut a lot of holes over the years with an 8 inch Mora and it got very old.
If you’re in a smaller portable, the smaller hole leaves you more room inside to set things down. And finally a big Crappie has a harder time getting turned around in a 6 inch hole. If he falls off the hook you still have a chance to grab him.

Now I’ve got myself revved up for some panfish action. Were’s some good ice?

you dont want a hand auger that is too big, it can be very hard to drill with being that it covers more area.

For pannies – 4 1/2 inch works great.
Eyes and slimers I go 8 inch.

My 5inch spoon auger is still going strong.

And it reopens all those larger holes everyone else likes to make.

A 5″ Lazer would be a better option for panfish. There are not many fish that won’t fit through a 5″ hole. Whatever size you go with make sure it’s a StrikeMaster Lazer.

I like an 8 inch for everything. Keep your blades sharp and no worries. I have been a bit intrigued by the electric drill and smaller bit for perch hole hopping here on the big lake Mendota. Anything less than 8 and the dang transducer keeps getting in the way.

Yes, the lazer is great, but if you want to cut with less resistence, the Strikemaster Mora in a 5 or 6 inch is just fine and about half the cost.

    500 has a valid point
The Lazer is a fast cutting auger, but the price is a little steep.
I use a 6″ Mora that has been well used over the years. As long as you take care of the blades, it will cut great. The price of the Mora’s are more in line with someone working with a tight budget

What he said 5 inch is much easier to drill than 6 or 8 and you have no problems getting pan fish up the hole

I have a 7″ but I use mine for pans/ and game fish. It is certainly a little tougher to drill than a 6″ especially if you are pounding 25 holes or so an outing like I like to do. If you are strictly going pans I would go with a 5″

i roll with the 6″ lazer..I have a mora as well, but you know what they say..you get what you pay for. I bet I spent more than the cost of a lazer on blades alone for my mora, because after a month or 2 of hard drilling like I do, they were worn out and I couldn’t get them sharpened back up to par. go with the lazer, it won’t disappoint. When the ice gets real thick, we still use it. We either take turns or I put my hand on top, and have someone else put their hand on top of mine, and we double drill. I’ve been known to drill probably 25-30 holes a day..just depends on what’s going on.

I also like the smaller hand augers, however after watching my brother I am thinking of switching to the Drill auger. Its small, you use a portable drill from your shop, quite and quick. It opens up several holes with little effort.

A 6″ auger is idle for the fishing you are plaaning on doing but if you ever want to go for the walleyes a 8″ would be a little better….

I have a 6” Lazer hand auger and it works great. The 6” is probably the best all around size. I am thinking about getting a 5” as it sounds like it would drill even faster. For thicker ice I have a Strikemaster 8” gas auger thats fantastic at drilling holes.
    Thanks, Bill

I have pulled an 8# Northern through a 6 inch hole. Couple things to keep in mind… when fishing, it is best to stay mobile. If you are just going to drill 2 holes and drop 2 lines… then an 8 inch would work. But if you want to run and gun and keep on the fish… then 6 inches is perfect and won’t tire you out quite so much… ESPECIALLY come later winter. Even if you intend to fish for walleye or pike at some point… a 6 inch will still work, it only requires a little more effort on your part to “work” the fish and get it pointing the right way to pull through the hole. Again, I have pulled an 8# through that size hole.

    I agree 100%

I saw some guys using 10 inch gas auger yesterday on the ice and all I could think was what size crappie are they planning on catching. A couple years ago the snow blew over the hole and I opened it up all the way to my knee

I was given an 8″ Lazer as a gift, great auger, but would like to have returned it for a 6″. The smaller 6″ is just that much easier to drill holes with. Great for early ice.

A six inch auger is good auger for anything really. Ive watched friends pull nice bass and walleye out of six inch holes, and they also cut through the ice a lot easier then eight.

I’ve pulled 8lb channel cats through a 6″ hole. If you’re patient, it’s no big deal.

My friend has a 5″ lazer that cuts like a hot knife thru butter. We always use that early ice and for quick depth references. No problems ever pulling a fish thru the hole either I won’t change the subject, but I hate 10″ augers. They’re one thing inside a permanent house, but I’ve watched too many people and myself fall in a 10″ hole.

Thats what I don’t like about a 10 inch hole also….I for one have put my big foot in one just to many times…its really bad after a new snow cover…..down you go with a wet foot…..

I use face paint and try to match the bark of the tree im sitting in. I cover my neck, ears and forhead also. I spend 15 minutes mixing the colors and making sure I blend in. I had a buck look at me while I was on a tree stand and I watched him and he looked right through me. I couldn’t blink he was looking so hard so I just squinted to control my blinking. If I wouldn’t have had face paint on I know he would have recognized me even though I was in full cammies.
