found out yesterday i will be getting my grandpas .308 lever action I was wondering if they are a good deer rifle? Also i have only shot a .30-06 so i was wondering what grain to buy? I will be hunting whitetails in wood area so there will be no shots over 100 yards

    Thanks much

I would think 150 grains would be a good starting point. You could pick up some 160’s too and see what shoots better at 100 yards.

D, I’ve been deer hunting w/ my BLR for over 20 years and love it. Small, lightweight and accurate out to 250 yrds. I shoot 165 grain but my setup overlooks alot of open country. If you are in the woods I would definately shoot 180 grain.

Is it a Savage or Browning? Either is great and both employ clips to eliminate feeding problems.
The .308 has nearly identical ballistics to a 30.06 out to 300 yards and is inherently accurate. It is a benchmark caliber in many rifle competitions.
It is more than adequate on deer/black bear and many use it on thick cover Elk hunts.
As far as bullet weights, I have dropped several whitetails in their tracks with a 140gr bullet from my 7MM 08…(which is a .308 casing necked down to .284(7MM). I don’t feel you will need a 180gr bullet(which may be more difficult to find) Try some 150s and 165s as “G” mentioned…Stick with the ones that group the best out of your rifle…
I prefer Nosler Accubonds (Federal Ammo), Hornady SSTs, or Interbonds. I reload my own ammo but .308 ammo is available most everywhere.
You will love that rifle and caliber for deer hunting!

That is all I have ever used is a 308, a 165 Premium is a good size. It has reached out kissed some dear at distances I am still amazed at. I shoot a BLR.

Like stated above very close to 30 06 but less kick and distance a bit less.

It has put the smack down to allot deer.
