Might be a bad ECM(electronic control module) or “Power Pack”.

Micah,
I’m no mechanic, but I’ve spent a lot of time working on my outboard over the last year or so…
I agree that it does sound like an ignition system problem. And It sounds like you have an intermittent and worsening problem, which leads me to believe it’s probably an ignition coil going bad. These are cheap and easy to replace. The difficulty can lie in identifying which one is going bad. You can possibly identify which cylinder has the problem by checking each cylinder for spark. I hear there are cheap spark testers available that make this really easy, but I just ground each plug to the cylinder head and watch for spark when I crank the engine. Just make sure you disconnect all the other plugs and keep track of the wires to make sure they get re-connected over the correct cylinders. For details on this procedure, do a google search.
Anyway, if you find one that’s not producing a spark (and you’re confident that it’s a good plug, wire, and connection) you’re one big step closer to solving your problem. However, if your problem isn’t consistently occurring you might have spark on all three when you check even though they aren’t always working. In any case, if you are suspicious of one you should consider swapping the coil out with a new one and see if that fixes the problem. It will cost you $20 (shop for parts online) and 1/2 hour, tops. You might consider just replacing all three of them if you can’t figure out which one is causing the problem, but I’d start with the cylinder that has the wet plug!
I obviously can’t guarantee that this will solve your problem, but it’s a reasonable bet and a relatively small investment in a possible fix.
I hope this is helpful!
John

Any chance your spark plug wires were ever reconnected but to the wrong cylinders so they are firing out of synche? I’m not sure the motor would even run though. Just a thought.
Sounds similar to something I had… power pack / voltage regulator…. did the trick
A few questions what type of outboard horsepower year etc?
Depending on what year some of the newer outboards will actually burn up the coil pack cranking them over with out a spark plug connected.
I am guessing it is ignition related.

Good point….on my HD you can burn out your ignition module…I always use a tester…cheaper
As Tom asked, please a bit more info on your motor. Four stroke or two stroke, carburated or not, or possibly an E-Tec. Let us know.
I missed what make, model and year your motor is ? I can ask our techs on Monday !!

I thought I would share a good friend of mines big buck he shot with the pistol during Iowa’s gun season. It ran by him at 60 yards, the first shot made him flinch and number two got the in the boiler room. Nice buck Joe!
Wow, Those are some great slpits! Guess he’s not getting a shoulder mount Awesome buck!
