Alright…dumb question maybe….but, I’m good at those. Here’s a quick run down of the “story”.

Live in MN, gun hunt in MN up by Wadena. Have 4 kids, 11, 9, 7, 5…all seem interested in hunting. 2 oldest play football, so it screws up every weekend from Aug – Oct. I was telling the wife it would sure be nice to get a bow to take the boys (the older 2 anyway for now) out hunting. Her sister and husband happened to move to Ellsworth last year…they have 30 acres out in the country north of town. Looks like a FANTASTIC area to me. He says he has never seen a deer. (I asked him if he knew what they looked like ) Anyway, the wife says…bless her little heart ….Why don’t you get a bow and we can go out to my sisters on Saturdays after football and you can bow hunt with the boys out there!!

So, anyone hunt in that area? Good area? Sparse area? I have NO idea as I haven’t spent THAT much time out there, but possibly next fall, may have to spend ALOT of time out there…..

If it works…looking for a bow will be the next project.

What was the answer to your question on whether he knows what they look like?

I’m no WI expert yet……but I see plenty of deer in there on my way to Buffalo County.

I have seen some nice deer come out of that area. My buddy lives south of Ellsworth and we have seen some nice ones down there too. Our neihbor told us they never saw any turkeys or deer after living there a year! Just because they never saw them didn’t mean they were not there.

Good luck and remember to practice year round with a bow.

you could even set up a couple trail cameras and hunt it late season It’s a blast to hunt them in the snow, plus you can look for trails to see where they are going and heading to

I’ve had a little luck bowhunting just south of Ellsworth!

Years ago I gun hunted with a group of guys that we hunted the north side of Ellsworth in the Martell area. There is great hunting in the Rush River area north of Ellsworth area also. I’ve got topo maps of the Ellsworth area along with a plat book with the area land owners if you would like to tell me the area you can hunt too???

My In-laws moved out there a year and a half ago onto 13 acres with unlimited use of some Farm land in the area as well. No deer out there Well Minus the 13 pointer taken last year and a few other beast!

You may have to do ALOT of knocking on doors to find some good land as most of it is well posted. However rumor has it most of the posted land would allow a hunter or two they just don’t want everyone in the state using it. Oh No pheasants, turkeys, or coyotes either.

    Fireman,
Not trying to discourage you at all, but I’d try it sooner than later. 5 non resident tags = big bucks – and not the ones with horns. Last I checked, the tag was around 160.00. If you have to buy 1 or 2 tags and are able to hunt quite a bit, its probably not a bad deal. Good luck. There are a lot of deer in in that area of Wisconsin. KK

    No not true.

WI offer out of state youth hunters who have passed “Gun Saftey” in their respected states at a reduced rate of $36.00 per youth. This also gives them not only a Gun kill buck and doe tag but also a fishing lisc. and small game lisc.

Click on this link to view Nonresident (NR) fees for WI Non Resident Fees

It would be worth the effort to take a MN kid hunting in WI for those rates

I believe if you were to buy a Fishing lisc. Deer Lisc and a Small game lisc. in MN for a resident youth (12 to 17) there is no way you could match that!

Here is a link to MN (NR) MN DNR N.R. Fees

I still get a kick out of how one state can be higher or lower in their lisc. fees

Thanks Klink. I did not know that. That is a great program.

It looks like the 36.00 tag is only for the Gun Deer license, not an archery license. The Youth conservation license would include both but the cost would be 77.00. Still an awesome deal for all the stuff included.

I am taking my 14 yr old cousin hunting with me this year in WI. I thought it was going to cost her $160 to be able to hunt. So when she asked me early this summer to hunt of course I said yes. But I told her she was going to have to save her pennies and work for it. I had her help me paint our new house and gave her 3/4 of the money.

But that lill turd saved enough to buy her lisc. and a new scope for her rifle.

When we went to get her lisc. the gal behind the counter told me about the program. I was shocked! Still am in fact! Then she told me the price that same little turd now has a bunch of extra cash in her pocket

So MN folks if you have a youngster and a place to hunt in WI take advantage of this!!

    Great deal!
