WELL MIINE TURNS 16 ON THE 19TH
Well…ask my son-in-law what I was doing the very first time my daughter brought him home to meet us……and I am NOT kidding
November 8, 2007 at 10:50 am #623219Ah yes, it brings back memories. And if the young man showed up as we were getting home from a day of hunting and admired our kill I’d always respond with “Yeap, killing is a hobby of mine” and I would say it with a very straight face. Unfortunately with boys at that age the hormones are so strong I don’t think it matttered
November 8, 2007 at 1:30 pm #623240Thanks Clarence, My daughter turns 14 on Saturday so it is my favorite song too.
November 8, 2007 at 1:34 pm #623242That song brings back some memories. I’m only 24, but I’ve been shown the knife collection, the gun collection, marksmanship awards from the police academy , and the older brother who is a D1 wrestler. Well I’m still here today, so I did something right.
November 8, 2007 at 3:11 pm #623267My daughter is only 8 right now but I think I might have to head out and buy that CD and archive it for 5 years.

November 13, 2007 at 2:57 pm #198656Im curious as to when you guys think the second rut is?? Ive heard the end of november to the first week and a half into december. But this depends on when the actual rut started. And 28 days later the second rut would follow. Is this true?? If so, do you guys call as often as you do during the primary rut? I love hunting late season and hope i don’t get screwed over by gun hunters like i did the last two weekends
November 13, 2007 at 3:13 pm #13833the first one is in full swing now. Hunt now. The second follow up would be near Dec. 10th
November 13, 2007 at 3:31 pm #13836You are correct Tom – a doe that do not get bred the first time around will come into estrus again 28 days later. That being said, I’ve never witnessed “the 2nd rut”. Usually by that time of the year (early Dec to mid Dec) I’m focusing on food sources and I don’t really care about what the does are doing.

thats a fact. Its only those that didn’t get breed come into heat again. Some young ones can come in real late too. But its no all out flurry again
November 13, 2007 at 4:33 pm #13644Eron, I agree with you, but I have expereienced the 2nd rut. It is unbelievable if you can time it right and be in the right spot. Although it is not as crazy of a flurry overall, I find it 2 times as intense but shorter lived. There is more competition for a very small number of does that come into cycle again. If you still have a few Mature bucks in the woods they are competing for just a small #/handfull of does. Some of my most intense fights witnessed have been in early December. I also find calling in mature deer easier at that time of year then the normal peak of the rut.
November 13, 2007 at 6:43 pm #13655Personally I think Saturday the 10th was the peak of the Rut in most parts of MN. That puts the secondary Rut on December 8th. Although a person should keep in mind Rutting activity happens mid October through Mid December and sometimes even later.
The secondary rut has the chance to be really good this year primarily because of the huge number of Fawns. Many doe fawns come into heat in December and that causes a big peak in rutting activity. I am betting on the weekend of December 8th personally, which is still Muzzleloader season in MN.
I do agree that the secondary Rut is far from the Primary, but sometimes the big old bucks can be fooled because of the lack of hunting pressure
November 13, 2007 at 7:03 pm #13661I think everybody thinks rut peaks on different days. It depends who sees what on their certain outting. Does have been getting bred for awhile now although I haven’t witnessed any. At that same time their getting bred there is still does with their fawns. So it can really be a strung out event. I suppose that the most quiet days in the woods without big buck sightings are technically most “intense” cause more than likely any good buck has a hot doe pinned down. Depends what each individual defines the rut as. Little bucks are always on the move cause if there is a good buck around he ain’t getting any.
They travel alot too as we all know. I just sit and sit until one of the does that walks by me everynight goes into heat. Then the big boys will come find her.
I see no peak to the rut. I so see it wind up and wind down somewhat but it takes awhile for all the does to come into heat. If your around hot does than you might think the peak was this day but I may have been around does that weren’t ready and had a lame night cause the good buck that frequents my area checked them all over night and is now a mile away by your place…..But he’ll be back to check again in a day or two.November 13, 2007 at 10:51 pm #13688This is what I read on a report on why the does come into estrous. The report was a scientific examination on the whats and whys. This biologist said its the lack of sun and moon light, the dark of the moon that triggers the does into estrous. It has to do with the light entering the eyes and the reaction on the back of the eyeball that sets her chemistry into motion. So the way I look at it is I concentrate more on the dark of the moon until the seasons over to be peak for me. I know the bucks do search until thier racks fall off in the spring, that I know is fact down here and they search all winter. When theres snow on the ground and you see a fawn that still has spots you know they breed late and thats a sign of a healthy deer herd the report said. When the bucks activity peaks? I don’t know if there is a peak or thier constantly hunting for does. Down here guys have said for years that they run themselves into the ground looking for does all during the season, maybe they run harder though during the dark of the moon. I got my first buck during mid december and only a few weeks until the season closed, he was trailing a doe just coming into estrous. She’d move, he’d move and lay down. She kept her distance and she was 20 steps ahead of him all the way down the creek from where I first seen them to where I was. I also know at this time the bucks keep there eyes open wide for any other buck and try to keep her away from him, it seemed that way when I watched what was going on, thats why I was able to get out of my stand and walk to get a shot setup, he was looking hard for another buck he thought was there and not for a human.
November 14, 2007 at 3:20 am #13713Ripper is right I feel the second is only good for about 2 to 3 days it is short but intense also a lot of fawns getting chased around this time.
