I was hunting s.e minn. for the first time and saw 15 deer by 9:15. 4 bucks one well over 165 another 8 and some scrubs. I told myself i wasn’t going to shoot a doe but 7 deer walked right in front of my stand so i picked out the biggest doe took a deep breath and let one fly. It look like a perfect shoot i watched the arrow hit right behind the shoulder maybe a little high but thought it was good. I waited for 2 hours, since the deer were everywhere i thought maybe a buck would come by. So after that I got out of the tree found the arrow solid blood, found the deer trail suprised it wasn’t layingthere. long story short half mile crossing peoples land and walking under people stands I had to give up before i got lost. I found bright red blood it would be dime size spots than every say 50 feet a softball size spot anyone have any idea were i may have hit it. That was my first deer i have every had a good shot at too it sucks.

What color was the blood? did u smell it to see if it stinks? If it did it was a gut shot and they can run for miles like that

If you have that much blood, you made a good shot. Deer are tough, they can make it a long ways. If the blood trail ends and there is no deer, make sure to take a hard look around because the deer might be laying very close(happens a lot).

You shouldnt have quit tracking that deer. Never give up unless the trail ends and you have done everything you can to try to recover your deer. Put some trail tape or something in your pocket to mark your route and you wont get lost. Mark a tree every so often so you can follow it back out. A spray bottle with some peroxide can come in handy if their is a minimal amount of blood or the area is wet.. only blood will bubble.

With that much blood you probably got one of the main arteries going ot the heart if you didnt hit the heart itself. That deer likely made a mad dash as long as it could, and fell over shortly after it slowed down. Deer are tough.

It is legal in Minnesota to follow wounded game onto another persons property, however its wise to alert the land owner in many cases when possible.

If it was through the lungs it will be bright red, through the guts and it may stink. Did you find your arrow, was it a pass through. Good ideas on everything said befor, if you can search hard, it will be there.

    I agree with Dave.

I would head back out with some tape or T.P. and mark the blood trail. Re trace your steps. I think you will be able to find her.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I made bad shot on a Buck. We let it sit overnight. Went back in the morning found the trail marked it well with T.P. followed that trail for what seemed like forever. Then we re-traced our step and re checked the blood trail till we lost blood. Turned out that the Buck had doubled back and we walked past him a bunch of times.

In the end what we figured out was when we lost blood me and my bud started walking in small cirles around the last blood we found. It was not long and he found it buried in some brush. Man I was thankfull we found that deer!

I was in some woods i have never been in before and going through revines. I will always remember to bring tape thats a great suggestion. I swear on everything I made a good hit I watched the arrow in slow motion hit right behind her should she hunched over and kicked when I hit her. You where also right she made a made a mad dash because she never laid down. Just like you said heart shot ran until the adrenaline and blood were gone. I’m going to try to get out tomorrow but its hard with my job I do feel bad but I ran out of time I didn’t want to get lost. Thanks for all the great advice.

It also took the most againest the grain path through the woods. went through buck thorn and stickers instead of running down the trails right next to the buck thorn any thoughts on that.
