Well after seeing this guys tracks a couple of weeks ago I was finally able to get a couple of pics of him or her??? Not great pics but I guess they do exist in central MN. I know near nothing about black bears other than they are black but this thing looks darn big to me compared to deer the camera has taken pics of. The deer pic is for size reference.
Does anybody have an idea of what the orangish looking thingee is by his ear? Eye reflection? Does the Dnr do any sort of ear tagging?

I think thats a pretty good sized bear!! You had said you had came across some bear tracks prior? how big were its tracks, say in compared to a paper plate….and my guess is thats a DNR tag in its ear….much like a cow tag!! Ask a DNR CO next time you see one.

That ear looks to either have been split somehow and got infected or possibly a tick. Doesn’t look like a tag to me, besides the DNR wouldn’t waste their time tagging him, but not radio-collaring. Cool pics, looks like you have that camera set in the right place!

Great photo of a big bear. The orange thing by the ear is probably a DNR ear tag. I know that the dnr has ear tagged bear in Camp Ripley in the past. One of their ear tagged bear was shot North of Becker a couple of hunting seasons ago. I had a couple of photos of a smaller bear on my trailcam in central sherburne county in August 2006. Never saw him after that though.
