Went for a drive late afternoon and the deer were walking everywhere. I looked at the forcast and knew the windy front was about ready to end soon. The wind was still blowing some, around 10 to 15 mph but it was calming down by the hour. I drove one of the nearby roads and almost everywhere you looked the bucks and does were up and moving (alot). The wind haden’t stopped completely yet but the deer knew it was going to calm down soon and they took advantage of the calming conditions. We seen two nicer bucks, a 10 and a 12 pointer, in the 120″ to 140″ range plus a couple smaller bucks plus alot of does of all ages and fawns.

Something I did notice was the size and the coat condition of all the deer, they are really putting on the weight now and the fawns were so big I had to take a second look to see if they were 1 1/2 year olds when they were the new of this year, the early fawns that were born in early june were as big as I’ve ever seen them. The bucks were walking thier stuff that they don’t do until it starts to cool down and gets closer to the rut. It was very obvious they are ready to go this year.

All the deer are in excellent condition and have made big changes from a month to month and a half ago. It was so clear and calm this early moring that I heard goose or duck hunters hunting from around 7 miles away and I’ve never heard that befor from my house. The crystal clear and calm conditions that are here after the windy front moved through last night made it a perfect morning to be bowhunting. They don’t come much better then they did this morning. Take advantage of calming conditions after a windy front moves through, its a good time to be in your stand. Anybody else see these things this morning?

I noticed the same thing yesterday on my way home from work. It seemed odd to me that there were that many deer moving in the wind.

I went out this morning for a short hunt and only saw two deer. One was a little five pointer and the other was a little six.

Im convinced Lenny that its diffrent from timber to timber and area to area by what you are saying plus what i’ve heard from others. I don’t think its written in stone that the deer will automatically do certain things and do them the same in all areas plus thier habits change from hour to hour sometimes. I really enjoy getting the input I do from others here on the site so I can figure out when its time to go hunting and when to stay home, its always good in the timber though.
