The turnips are supposed to be planted in mid-August. They’ll eat the tops first, then come and paw the turnips out later.

I think Jim is right that they will eat the turnups later when the other plants have depleted. We planted turnups last year and they were pawing at them later in the season. We have 2 plot feilds of New Zealand clover and we fenced in small areas that the deer can,t get to and the height diference is about a foot in height . Good luck hunting everyone, our early season opens this coming thursday for gun.

Huckster, This is the first year hunting a foodplot I planted. It is a wildlife blend of clovers, rape, alfalfa, and turnips. I planted it in the corner of a field that has corn in it. I’ve repeatedly watched deer after deer walk across my plot to get to the corn The plot is full of tracks and beds I hope things change and they use it during legal hours and looking forward to reaping the benifits of late season, we’ll see if the turnips produce. Did you cut your plot or herbicide?? as I did not cause of the mix and also didn’t want to cut the turnip tops off.

If your plot contains Rape and Turnips you don’t want to cup them. The best time is coming for these two. After it starts to get really cold the rape and turnip tops will be eaten to the ground. Even later in the year, they will dig up the turnips and eat.

This time of year, deer will pass up most things to get to corn. Corn is very attractive to deer and will always be. If your plots are not being hit like you thought, try hitting them heavily with a fall fertilizer, you will be amazed at what that does.

I have a pretty large plot of Rape planted and they hit it real hard in August and the bucks will hit it real hard again in the next couple weeks. Right now they are eating up the pumpkin patch/and corn.

I did spray it w/roundup,waited two weeks and then seeded it with quaker boys fall feast, and as i said threw in an xtra 10 lbs of turnips, I seeded several hundred yds in the woods on trails I pushed and wich lead to the food plot surrounded by woods and on 3 sides and corn feild on the otherside. I to have been dissapointed by the lack of activity. however I think with the corn there yet I believe that they spend a lot of time in there that is there safehaven now. withen 2 weeks I expect the crops will be out and then hopefully they will eat on the plot. I was told that they wont eat the turnip leaves or the turnips untill it freezes. thank for the input guys

Same is true about Rape. It gets much more palatable later in the year.

I can’t stress enough the importance of fertilizer though. Deer will eat well fertilized weeds before they eat off your plot if the soil is poor and they are not fertilized.

When we get our first frost it brings out the sugars in turnips and brassicus and it is like candy to deer.
