Anyone heading out tonight with the cool weather and all! I plan on headin out around 3 I hope or whenever possible and chase the big boys out there again tonight! Good luck and also I hear 2 reports of bucks coming into rattling? Would I be hurting anything by being a little aggresive tonight possibly? Any opinions on that one.

I will be out tonight, the wind is supposed to lay down tonight. First calm evening after 2 days of wind should be EXCELLENT. No calling or rattling yet for me, I will wait for next week to start that. Should not hurt unless you overdue it.

I planned on just doing some light rattling tonight nothing to intense but I am nervous about possibly spooking the does out though I am in the middle of a woods between the bedding area and they feeding area and pond and wanna smack a doe so I am wondering if maybe I should just sit back and watch the squirrels and the over populated turkeys in there, holy smokes there everywhere there! It is a 90 acre woods with a state park buttin up to it and plan on moving to my stands tonight away from the pond and feeding and work my way towards the funnel in the transition area since the bucks have been coming out near dark lately.

I’ll be out all weekend and I can’t wait! I haven’t been out since opener, can’t sit in a stand with temps in the 80’s!
Good luck to everyone out in the stands this weekend!

For you guys up there its getting close to banging some horns together a little harder but i wouldn’t do it many times in a day. Watch for what the woods doing and telling you then try maybe an early morning to get thier attention and to bring them to your area or atleast get them interisted in that other buck. If thier interisted they will come check it out, maybe slow maybe fast. Wait a few hours then try a little more aggressive secquence around the noon hour but still not to hard to scare everything away. Then maybe around 2;00 then about an hour later befor you have to leave the tree. There still 3 too 4 weeks of prerut and everday that goes by they are getting more pumped up, come time at the end of the month they will be looking hard. Setting a sequence ratteling on a regular basis wit two bucks that matched in sized decently tells the more dominate buck he has competition, ifhes going to try to protect his doe or does in the future he should come and check the area out and whos making all the noise and setting thier ground. Got to get them interisted but don’t overdo it, they home in on those things too and know somethings up then. I try for a natural sequence and don;t everdo it at any time. I’Ve pulled in some big bucks that way. If your going to do it put a doe decoy right by your stand with a tail that moves from a piece of monofiliment. When the buck sees the doe just flip her tail, that gets thier attention. He might come in close enough for a shot.

    Good info there Mossydan.

I had an interesting hunt last night. I made the long drive up to Park Rapids for an evening hunt. Got on my stand about 5:00 and it was 6:00 before 2 does and 2 fawns showed up on my winter wheat plot. They grazed away for almost 20 minutes when a spike buck came in right under my stand and fed for a while and then ran off the does and fawns. With the NW wind and the spike exactly down wind of me I knew he would not last long. Suprisingly, it took almost 10 minutes before the nose went up and the look of fear covered his face. A couple stomps turned into a fast walk and you know how it goes from there, gone.

So, there I sat, no deer around and prime time just around the corner. With the overcast skies last night I knew the window would be short if any of the big guys were going to show themselves. All of a sudden here he comes, walking up the trail with he eyes on the food plot. This normally cautious big boy was making a mistake that I have yet to see. He headed directly out to the food plot presenting a walking 28 yard broadside shot. The light was fading fast and I could not tell which deer it was, although the atlers were impressive and the body size was huge. I chose not to attemp that shot and put my bow back down. He headed right past me and directly down wind. Needless to say he did not like what he was smelling and ran back up wind of me, stopping at 20 yards. By this time it was to late to shoot and I was now just a spectator hoping to not get busted.

Well, I sat patiently as he circled up wind, cicling my tree and then eventually back to the food plot about 6 yards from my stand. There for the next 30 minutes I got to watch this beast feed as I sat in the dark hoping I would not spook him. Eventually 4 deer came in from behind me and ran him off. I want to thank the 4 deer that came in and scared that buck off as it was nice to get out of my stand at 8:15 finally

It is nights like last night that make hunting so enjoyable

Good hunt Scott, I’ve had that happen a few times too, its better to sit in your stand until after all the deer are gone or atleast a ways away so you can get out undetected. Scott you know whats saved my butt a couple times when a deer senses somethings up and it isn’t forsure what it is even though they suspect a human. I place a turkey diaphram on the roof of my mouth, when a deer of eigther sex senses something I just yelp once of twice and the deer go off aleart and go back to what they were doing. Turkeys are the eyes of the woods and if a turkey says its ok the deer thinks its ok too. Deer don’t know turkeys can’t smell but they rely on thier eyesight to let everything else know if somethings around. Diaphram turkey calls help a guy get in and out of the woods when the time arises. I use the raspy old hen and thier only about $5, good investment too me and they really do work.

Mossy, I would’ve never thought of that. I can see how well that would work! Small and easy to carry as my pack is already too full.
