Good info there Mossydan.
I had an interesting hunt last night. I made the long drive up to Park Rapids for an evening hunt. Got on my stand about 5:00 and it was 6:00 before 2 does and 2 fawns showed up on my winter wheat plot. They grazed away for almost 20 minutes when a spike buck came in right under my stand and fed for a while and then ran off the does and fawns. With the NW wind and the spike exactly down wind of me I knew he would not last long. Suprisingly, it took almost 10 minutes before the nose went up and the look of fear covered his face. A couple stomps turned into a fast walk and you know how it goes from there, gone.
So, there I sat, no deer around and prime time just around the corner. With the overcast skies last night I knew the window would be short if any of the big guys were going to show themselves. All of a sudden here he comes, walking up the trail with he eyes on the food plot. This normally cautious big boy was making a mistake that I have yet to see. He headed directly out to the food plot presenting a walking 28 yard broadside shot. The light was fading fast and I could not tell which deer it was, although the atlers were impressive and the body size was huge. I chose not to attemp that shot and put my bow back down. He headed right past me and directly down wind. Needless to say he did not like what he was smelling and ran back up wind of me, stopping at 20 yards. By this time it was to late to shoot and I was now just a spectator hoping to not get busted.
Well, I sat patiently as he circled up wind, cicling my tree and then eventually back to the food plot about 6 yards from my stand. There for the next 30 minutes I got to watch this beast feed as I sat in the dark hoping I would not spook him. Eventually 4 deer came in from behind me and ran him off. I want to thank the 4 deer that came in and scared that buck off as it was nice to get out of my stand at 8:15 finally
It is nights like last night that make hunting so enjoyable
