Scott, how many acres do you own? Do the people around you do deer management as well? Just curious…I’m leasing 80 acres that is bordered by about 500 acres of county land to the north and east and private land to the south and west. The owner told me that the neighbors basically shoot anything that comes by. That sucks but I’m wondering if we let some go this year that maybe, just maybe they will be around in a year or so. I’m not sure how heavily the public land is hunted but is it possible we could make the 80 a sanctuary that would eventually hold some nice ones? or is an 80 too small? What are your thoughts?

August 17, 2007 at 7:42 pm #34196We have 170 acres. Some friends of ours own the 80 behind us and they are on the same plan as us. The best part is there is 100 acres next to us that no one hunts, that makes a big difference when the pressure gets bad. We also do not go into our woods at all. If they don’t come to us, they live another year.
Across the road from us there is 600 acres that is managed pretty similar to the way we manage our land. 1 mile down the road there is a tract of over 2000 acres that is managed very strict. So, it all helps.
We started this 4 years ago and each year the bucks get bigger and bigger, fun to see. We have made a couple mistakes over the years (I did last year) by harvesting a young buck but for the most part the plan is working great and it gives me incentive to work harder and harder on our food plots.

BTW, when I read the subject I thought you were talking about my waist line.

August 18, 2007 at 1:49 am #34210My brother and i have been doing a lot of QDM in my neighborhood for the past 4-5 years. We hunt on a couple neighbors land with the biggest being 13 acres But, this year we have seen about 6-8 different bucks on different trail cameras across our neighborhood which has been a huge break through to us!! We mostly shoot does in the neighborhood and shoot bucks on other property that we have permission on, but it is a blast watching QDM at its work. Most people don’t care about it but the serious bowhunters do
