A reply from the DNR on this water topic..

“Water is not defined as bait when referring to hunting deer in Minnesota.”

I think you are misinforming people a little bit. Baiting isn’t allowed in the southern half of the state of WI. In the northern half, you can only have 2 gallons of bait/ 40 acres of land. If you have 80 acres you can have 2 “piles” but they can’t be w/i 100 yards of each other…again neither over 2 gallons. Any 100 lb pile of bait is just as illegal in WI as it is in MN.

I hunt by LaX and there haven’t been any CWD cases even in the adjacent counties. I’ll try to paste the WI regulations which show where the cases have been found. I think the baiting and CWD info is on pages 40 – 42. In my 20 yrs of hunting here I’ve never seen these stacks of corn for sale you have seen. Maybe in northern WI they are sold, but again you can only have 2 gal/ 40acres on public land.

The WI regs says “Water is not considered bait”.

Good luck to all early season bow hunters.

Thank you witte. I was thinking Muskybuck could interview for being a writer for Wisconsin ODN. I’ll start by stating I’m not a fan of baiting.

    Quote:

Baiting and feeding deer has spread CWD in WI.

If you have proof of this, why aren’t you working for the DNR? Based on the articles I’ve read, they aren’t really sure what is spreading it. If I recall, it started out West. Did the deer in Wisconsin go on a road trip and swap spit with those deer only to bring it back to Wisconsin? Damn bait piles…

    Quote:

Some of the corn piles you run into out in the woods in WI are huge. ATV’s are used to haul in bushels and bushels. It is pretty discouraging to be walking out inb the woods, not close to any road , start seeing lots of deer sign and then run into a corn pile.

If your seeing all these huge bait piles, why aren’t you calling the DNR? I would be. It is illegal. As witte said, you can only use 2 gallons. As far as ATV’s hauling in the corn piles, they had better stay on ATV designated trails on public land or you should be calling the DNR to report them.

    Quote:

If you drive by a gas station in WI during deer hunting there will be 100 pound stacks of corn for sale stacked by the hundreds.

I drive up north every weekend and haven’t seen the 100 pound sacks of corn you refer too. I agree it is easy to get corn. But I’ve seen it mainly in 50 pound bags. Again, you can only put out 2 gallons at a time.

    MuskyBuck,
I agree that I don’t want to see CWD spread and also wish they would ban baiting.

Witte did say on “public land”. Maybe there are some larger piles on private land that would get the deer to congregate more therefor making them more suseptable to disease. My brother lives in wi. I will have to ask him what he has seen.

It doesn’t matter whether your on public or private land. The law is still the same 2 gallon limit. Are there people not following the law? ABSOLUTELY, on both public and private land.

Who are we kidding. I don’t care if its minerals, corn, liquid scent, water, food plots, or whatever. If you put it out in the woods, hang a stand over it and hunt there you are baiting. You may not be breaking the law, but you are baiting. I’m not saying its wrong, but lets call a spade a spade.

So if I hang a stand over the neighbors corn field. Is he “baiting” for me?
