I think we are all on the same page here…. We (as IDA members) should recruite a DNR officer that could help us understand meanings of not only this rule but may other vauge rules in the book. There has to be a few wardens out there that would be happy to join our little family here! So many times I think DNR officers can interpet the rules in their minds as they wish and depending on your attitude you take with them effects the outcome.

jldiiPosts: 2294August 7, 2007 at 8:52 pm #33738Be safe and place a sign next to any bait, or water that says…..”This was placed here soley for the use of squirrels, rabbits, and birds…. any deer caught feeding or drinking from here will be shot!”

August 8, 2007 at 7:25 am #33755I suspect you seen the article in Field and Stream this month in the Whitetail handbook about how they suggest going about this.

August 8, 2007 at 12:31 pm #33757Baiting and feeding deer has spread CWD in WI.
Some of the corn piles you run into out in the woods in WI are huge. ATV’s are used to haul in bushels and bushels. It is pretty discouraging to be walking out inb the woods, not close to any road , start seeing lots of deer sign and then run into a corn pile.
Now, when there have been attempts to stop this local gas stations and feed stores cry that there will be financial hardships on their part and they would have to go out of business if they could not sell corn to bait deer.
If you drive by a gas station in WI during deer hunting there will be 100 pound stacks of corn for sale stacked by the hundreds.
CWD is taking over the state of WI. I guess it is spread by the deer spit left in the feeding station or the bait piles. I think soon it will be in MN too. It has spread close to La Crosse WI already.

August 13, 2007 at 8:31 pm #33949Lip, the only mineral I know of that is legal is the salt blocks. If you get the corn or grain based blocks, they must be removed before hunting. Also the syrups or liquids, are also illegal. the only thing is the liquids, cannot be removed so easily as a block. Also, the liquid, I would think a CO would have a hard time detecting it. For this reason, I only use the liquids in the summer and quit using a month before the season starts. I will sit on a salt block anytime.
I would think water would be OK.

August 13, 2007 at 8:43 pm #33950G, I think the most Liquids would be ok according to this from the DNR.
Quote:
Liquid scents, salt, and minerals are not considered bait, unless they
contain other foods defined below as bait.
• “Bait” is grain, fruit, vegetables, nuts, hay, or other food that is capable
of attracting or enticing deer and that has been transported and placed
by a person.

August 13, 2007 at 10:33 pm #33966The ones I use regularLy are Whitetail Addiction and Deer Cocaine. If you look at their ingrediants. They are mainly composed of Salt(NaCl), Sodium (Na) and a very little bit of Calcium (Ca).
In my book, those are minerals and pretty much the same as your Salt Block.
They are slated as being a “Nutritional Mineral Attractant’.
