For the most part, you have to put your time in hunting a big buck. Having pictures of that buck in my “area” gives me confidence to put in more time than I would hunting blind. With that said, I believe my trail cameras help me out A LOT…..Confidence

Cameras help me out alot.Especialy when hunting new land. They give me a great idea on what is there for deer and also what is not.Cameras can do alot of home work for you. They let me know when deer are moving and were they are at.Of course things change as fall progress on such as feeding habits and teritory.Early season you can bank on beans, corn and alfalfa.set your camera on a field edge or bedding to food.As fall comes on move to the woods more the deer are after mass crops such as acorns which are high in protien and fat,Getting geared up for the rut and winter. After the rut stay after the the mass crops also dont be afraid of the fields either.at this time a whitetail will eat 90 percent of the time he or she is awake,to put that body fat on for the long winter mounths.I know off the subject a bit,but if hang cameras in these locations they will be a great scouting tool for you. I vote yes

shaylaPosts: 1399August 3, 2007 at 3:06 am #33471I believe they would hurt my chances, but not for the reasons you might think…
I don’t own one because I think it would rob me of the real anticipation of what lives in those woods. I would rather walk every square inch of my area and scout for myself than ever let a camera deprive me of maintaining the woodsmanship I have worked so hard the past 30 years to acquire. I’m what most would call a traditionalist, in the fact that I like to do my own scouting and not rely on gadgetry (excluding my binoculars!). I don’t hold it against anyone for using cameras, just that they ain’t for me.
Besides that, I also don’t like the idea of leaving that much of my money tied to a tree for some jerk to steal.

August 5, 2007 at 2:22 am #33538I say they help,
for me new to bowhunting you need to get close to the deer, you need to know what is traveling the area, you cant shoot a big buck if big bucks dont live near by.I am still learning about trails and stand locations, bedding area vs. feeding area. camera helps big time.Thank You

August 5, 2007 at 8:58 pm #33573Slipsinker I dont just go in the woods and hang a camera where ever and thats all my scouting.I also scout every inch possible by foot, and spend countless hours in the woods scouting.I also use topo maps.To me the pictures of the deer I am hunting is a bonus. It also lets me know he is still there.Any one that knows me knows I am in the woods all year around.Bowhunting is not a seasonal sport to me, it is year around the more I know about the whitetail the better hunter I will be.It is a true passion of mine.

shaylaPosts: 1399August 6, 2007 at 3:34 am #33603Tony, sorry if you thought I was referring to your thread. Actually, the reply button in your thread was closer than scrolling all the way to the top of the original post. Sorry for the confusion.
I’m too lazy to scroll up but not too lazy to “walk every inch of my hunting area”….that’s funny!
Hey Lip, did you formulate an opinion yet? Inquiring minds wanna know.

August 13, 2007 at 2:43 am #33912Rob, It took me awhile to figure out the scanning deal but finally did it. Each of these deer I harvested are due to the fact that I had a camera out in the woods as I had never seen these deer other than the day I got them but had pics of them. So I knew there were some good deer using my area. This is a pic of my 02 shotgun buck roughly 1 mo earlier.

August 13, 2007 at 2:55 am #3391503 bowkill same deer different day. This particular deer I had multiple pics of but never seen it till that day. On this property the farmer lets a crew come in and shotgun hunt so it’s been a stipulation that I leave it alone for a week prior to gun season. Well after getting multiple pics of this deer I went to ask the other crew if I could bowhunt till gun season, he said ok and the next evening I got him! So if I had not gotten my pics of him I wouldn’t have asked to hunt those last few days before gun season and that means no big buck for me. Thank god he said yes!
