My grandpa is looking at getting a cross bow so i can get him back into bow hunting but neither one of us are quite sure what to get. Anybody out there have any experiences with these? Here are just a few questions I have.

What is a price range for a new mid level bow?
Are some brands better than others?
What are the most important things to look for when going to purchase one?

If there is anything else that you can share to help us out that would be great. I am sure the IDA Boys will come through once again

    Thanks guys,

    Erik,
My dad has a Ten Point. It has been a very good cross bow. I know he paid around $800 at the time, not sure what they are now. You may want to read some info on Archerytalk.com they have a cross bow section. The other thing I would do is go talk to a Will or Denny at Mouldy’s and get their opinions also. Good luck in your search!!

Eric I would also recommend the Ten Point. It is a very nice cross bow, areally good friend of the family shoots one and has nothing but good things to say about it.I have also shot his while shooting 3D and loved it.They are a bit pricey, but well worth the money. If I were you take your Grandpa and check one out, along with others make sure were you go that you will be able to shoot the bow for yourselves. That is the only way to see what will fit you guys best .

JUs tlike anything you can pay form a little bit, all the way up. I think they range just under what a regualr bow costs. $300-$1000. I would go with either a Horton or Ten Point. My Dad ended up choosing a Horton a few years back and loves his.

My father-in-law has had a pile of crossbows and is rather well versed in them. Here is his take on them: Horton: Likes it a lot was rather inexpensive, shoots well, sort of heavy and clumbsy but all around good unit. Parker: This WAS his favorite until he lost a record buck to a malfunction of the weapon. The Parker always shot true until one day he pulled a bead on a 180 class buck the bow was shooting 12″ high at 20 yards made a poor shot and lost the deer. It seems that the stock had separated from the rail and was causing the issue. Ten Point: He now uses his Ten Point and it is his all around favorite. It shoots true and is a very refined weapon. He does have his eyes on another one that is made by Bow Tech that supposed to be an absoulute screamer, and I think he would have bought that one too, but he has heard of some problems with them to date so he sad he would wait on that one. I am not sure whay he has so many cross bows, but I guess if a guy can have many guns another could have a bunch of crossbows.

Ok, now my thoughts. All of his I think are good crossbows as I have shot them all. The only thing I don’t like about crossbows is how bulk they are for transport and storage. With that, I did see one that was of a recurve design that shoots up around 300 fps, and the beauty of that one was that the limbs fold up for transport and storage. This is one that I may take a closer look at.

    Hope this helps,

As with most things, price usually brings a level of quality. I have a Horton which cost about $600 all set up. It shoots just fine. My BIL shoots a Tenpoint and his shoots fine, too. Although he did blow his up last year when he shot it with a loose limb bolt. This was after about 5 years of shooting and he never did any maintanance to it. This was no fault of the bow, just an operator error.

I’d buy the best you can afford. Horton is a good mid-level bow ($600+) and Tenpoint is a good upper level bow.($900+)

If he has upper body strength limitations, consider getting the crank type cocking mechanism. Its about $100-$150 upgrade, but well worth it if he is limited physically.

I saw that there is a Ten Point combo for $1999. Now that must be quite the combo….
