That is in your eyes, not everyone elses. Weather is a big factor in having this type of season early.
As far as deer being predictable, they are just as predictable if not more, when the corn is still standing. IF you pattern the deer in the area you are hunting, you can almost set it to a clock when the does and younger deer will be coming from the woods to the corn or when they will be coming out of the corn to feed on adjacent alfalfa or beans.July 17, 2007 at 2:36 am #590956

Why dont we all just hunt when its nice out and fish when there biting then. Fair-weathered outdoorsmen, is where they’d fall. Wats you must be realy good, if you set your watch to them.

Wats, my point is with the corn still up many deer hardly ever leave the corn during shooting hours. They bed & feed inside of that corn, so you see a lot less movement because of this. If they do come of the corn into the adjacent alphapha or beans if there are beans still standing at this time of the early season. I was thinking more of bow hunting, but you are right you could reach out farther with a rifle. But like I said many deer do not come out of the corn, at least during shooting hours. With the corn down, now these deer are forced to use the woods and are forced to seek the food and come by your stand.!

July 17, 2007 at 10:09 pm #32976You are damn right I am good When I bow hunted hard, I put more hours in the field than most months before season started. I carried the DB blind out starting in July, in the heat, just to sit and sweat inside that heat box and study the deer in the areas I hunted. Call me what you want, but it was/is my choice to hunt or fish the days I so chose. But, since you have no clue what I am about and how I hunted, I will let you know a little. I hunted in the pouring rain, the freezing cold, the heat, and on days the wind blew so damn hard it was a chore to stay in the stand. But I did anyway. The same goes for fishing, I have been out in all conditions. And for you to once again attack me on my opinion and catagorize me without EVER laying eyes on me or ever meeting me, is plain ridiculous. I would appreciate it if you didn’t ever judge me until you spend some time around me or know how hard I have worked in the things I enjoy.
As far as the deer living in the corn while it is up, yes that is true to a degree. But, they do not live a life of seclusion in the corn. They will and do come out of that corn more than once a day and at different times of the day. Does and fawns will almost always come out of the corn in the late afternoons and evenings to mingle and getr away from the bugs in the early part of the seasons. That is the deer the DNR are targeting. I am not going to go into buck behavior since that is not part of the discussion, just does and fawns. Even though the young bucks typically follow the same patterns as does at least for the first and second year of their life.

If ya dont want to hunt when its cold well STAY HOME.
would you say that to a 12 year old who wanted to go on there first hunt or to a grandparent who it could be there last hunt?

Greg you being a parent of two kids I would think you would understand my view on this if not I feel sorry for your kids. The last thing I want to do on my daughter’s first deer hunt is have it be a bad experience for her and turn her off to deer hunting for good.

I never said anything about wanting nice weather for dear hunting for myself or the average deer hunter, what I said was it would be good for young first time hunters and Seniors who can not take the cold, it would not hurt my feelings at all if this was a youth/senior hunt only.

Steve, I to would not want her first experience to be a bad one. If we dont pass our abilities to hunt on to the youth who will, but I also want them to learn how to hunt in adverse conditions. Is there a problem with that?

July 18, 2007 at 3:20 am #32988Wats, I was in noway taking a shot at you for saying “you must be good” I was serious. I’ve spend alot of time in the tree before and during the seasons and I’ve never been able to get them that patterned. It just shows me I’ve got more to learn.

Nope no problem with that I also want her to learn to hunt in adverse conditions, but not her first year of hunting, I want it to be an enjoyable experience her first time out. I think that maybe that is one thing we both could agree on.

July 18, 2007 at 3:57 am #32991Gman, In Coyote’s defense, he does more with his kids than most do. So go fly a kite. You hav eyour opinion, Coyote has his, I have mine too. EARN A BUCK. If you guys really think that this all boils down to taking a kid hunting or getting a senior out, well……get real. I don’t know what it has to do with but I don’t think its the answer to thinning the deer population, thats for sure.
Come on Wats, another melon head response? So its the trophy hunters fault that there is a over population of does? Get real man. I’m sorry but you said it. Most trophy hunters I know, including myself, have places where we go wack some does, almost as practice and keep the honey holes quiet and hold out for a doe. Heck, I was never involved with this but there was and still kind of is a deal in Rochester where there was a huge amount of acreage that was leased by 20+ hunters to hunt….Primarily to try to kill big bucks.(Darn trophy hunters) Well they lso worked with the DNR to get the number of does that the DNR would like taken out of that area per year. Towards the end of the season the would do deer drives with bow and bring in more people and knock down their quota of deer. Any good trophy hunter knows that having the right buck/doe ratio equates to better moment of quality bucks, which leads to more of a chance to catch a good buck crusing. So I think your comment is yet another one off base. Sorry. Just my opinion.

July 18, 2007 at 4:12 am #32994Steve, We have chatted before and I stopped by your house. I consider us more than I am with most here on IDA.
Don’t get me started about kids and what I wish I could share with them.
One thing is sure though, I also do not believe that a season should be created to accomadate each and every person. What would be next, having a season for people who have a permit to hunt from their trucks becasue they’re old and don’t or can’t stand the cold? By the way, my brother is in a wheelchair people so don’t think I’m a dick.
Its just the tradition end of things. I remember growing up and learning to hunt with friends and relatives. Same goes for fishing. Half the battle was peparing for the conditions and learning how to deal with it all. That was also half the fun. Setting out all the clothes and heat packs. Talking about what it all did. Learning how to use all of the equipment and how to take care of myself..
I am young, but call me old fashion if you want. Teaching the young how to deal with things is what being a parent is all about. If all you want is to take a kid and sit in a blind on a 68 degree day, pay me, I’ll get them a doe in 10 minutes on stand. I don’t mean to go on a tangent here but darn people, convience is nice, I like Kwik Trips too, but the experience of hunting and fishing is just what it is. Some days are good and some aren’t so good.
And for that matter, hunting weather has been pretty darn nice for the last many years. Its not like we live in Canada.
