Has anyone heard stories about this buck? This is the story in the e-mail I received:

    _________________________________________
    Subject: BIG BUCK

This is a 33 point buck shot near Mingo which is East of Des Moines on the Skunk River North of I-80. This guy was bragging about the deer so, the DNR got involved. Turns out he is a convicted felon and shot the deer with a shotgun. Felons can’t have shotguns, The DNR took the gun, the deer and arrested the guy. It is said to be the the largest rack in the US. Even larger than the Albia buck. Take it from there,

That buck netted 227-7/8 non-typical points at the Iowa Deer Classic, so it’s big but definitely not close to being a world record. To my knowledge there were no illegalities involved with its harvest.

I bowhunt in this area and have been aware of this deer for the past couple of years. There are a lot of rumors going around about this deer. But according to what the locals are say not much truth in most of it.

First- the deer has scored 247…a real monster, but not in the Albia Buck class, which had a gross score of over 300.

Second the DNR was on the spot within the hour and investigated the shoot. The kill was determined to be clean at the time. The shooter, apparantely has had some trouble in the past, so the convicted felon part with the shotgun wouldn’t shock me.

that’s the second case in iowa that ive heard this year. A kid(teenager) shot a buck at night with his shotgun. I believe this was either the 06′ season or 05′. anyway, the kid did not have a tag. so the next morning, he went to a license seller and bought a tag. What the idiot bought was a doe tag, and tagged the buck w/ a doe tag. DNR and a biologist were suspicious of the time of kill because the eyes were not clouded enough to go along w/ the story. So they confiscated the buck, and the kid did not get arrested because his rights were not read to him!!! only a small fine. Anyone hear of this story???

Ive heard a similar story. A kid from here shot a buck in city limits, not at night. He went and bought a tag and it was a doe tag, the convenience store screwed up when selling him the tag, and the kid did not read thet tag when it printed. Havent heard what happened to the deer, but I know the DNR was involved.

Let’s just hope for that animal and others like it it was harvested legally, If not I can only hope they throw the book at him. I can only wonder how many trophy deer are illegally taken year after year thus lowering law abiding hunters chance at a deer of a lifetime.

I contacted the dnr here a few months ago to check and see if a person had to have a shed hunting permit, they dont!, i was told by a guy who i shot bow league with that i had to have one and believed that for 8 years, WHEW!!!. The dnr officer told me at that time that it happens alot, they find a nice buck,,,they shoot him and then they go buy a liscense. They definately do have things they look for if they come across the hunter and deer. The deer does make some changes during the time after it was shot, metabolism changes. I have heard that they have many changes and things to look for just like in humans, deer science! Good deal!
