Outdoorsman93 I know here in Mn. it is illegal to remove sheds or other materials from plants or animal parts from any State owned park or “nature area”. With that being said, was this deer found in a State park ???? Regardless it still sucks they would take it from a young kid. I am assuming the cape from this deer came from a deer other than the 200 pt class deer that you found ?????

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news at all but i have to ask did you have your shed hunting liscense. Here in Iowa a person hunting sheds has to have a liscense so they can legally possess the antlers. This brings up another question, did you take the skull too. If it isn’t legal to take the skull this may be why. If you did have a liscense and the skull was illegal to possess then thats all they should have been able to take and return the rest back to you. If there isn’t any clear regulations explaining that you have to leave all parts of the deer in the woods except the rack then they shouldn’t have taken the rack from you. Im sure by law they have to give you the legal reason why they confiscated the rack and gave your uncle the fine, i’d be mad as heck too and i’d contact a lawyer if the dnr laws aren’t clear. Sometimes they leave the laws in the gray area so they can stretch the laws to thier benifit if they think they need too, i’d hire a lawyer and try to get the rack back if you had a shed liscense and they didn’t give any explaination that was sufficient why they confiscated it. A rack like that is worth a few thousand dollars for sure and close to the state records here. Contacting a good lawyer, hopefully finding one that also hunts, is a good idea. I’d ask a few lawyers if they also hunt as they will be a little more sensative to your situation.
What do you mean buy having a SHED HUNTING LISENSE IN IOWA ? So you are saying if a guy wanted to go looking for sheds you need to get a Lisense for that in Iowa?

December 20, 2006 at 8:51 pm #27502I also was poking around, looking for such a thing ??? Came up with nothing. I would think anybody shed hunting, who didn’t find any, is just on a nice walk in the woods….

December 20, 2006 at 9:54 pm #27509Just got off the phone with two guys at gander mountain and the great american outdoors store and everybody at both stores said they’ve never heard of the law. Im going to write the webmaster at the Iowa dnr to find if there is any law like this as they’ve answered all my questions in the past. I kinda feel dumb but i was told by a guy who is an avid shed hunter that you have to have one, thats where i got my information from, thought he was reliable, maybe his information still is, maybe not. I’ll post when i get an answer back from the dnr.

December 20, 2006 at 11:53 pm #27522I downloaded the regulations from the dnr site and looked them over, no law in there about having to have a permit or liscense. Im waiting for the webmaster for thier answer, it would be nice to not have to get a permit or liscense.

December 21, 2006 at 11:52 am #27541You can shed hunt in any state , no such thing as a lic’s to hunt sheds.
I know out West you can NOT take a found animal (dead buck with skull) with out a valid tag on it ! I know Iowa is the same ! Not sure about MN or any other state !?December 21, 2006 at 11:52 am #513685You can shed hunt in any state , no such thing as a lic’s to hunt sheds.

Not sure about MN or any other state !?December 22, 2006 at 3:32 pm #27583I got the answer back from the local dnr officer for my county here. He said its legal to pick up sheds that are detached from the skull and there is no liscense of permit needed. I said what if i find a rack thats still attached to the skull that i was to call him and he would come take a look at it and if it looked like it was a roadkill or died from natural causes he would issue me a tag. He said that theres been an increase of poachings of the bigger bucks and they just let them lay and come back in the spring and get the antlers and sell them on the market. He said if it looks like a lawful death of the animal he would issue a salvage tag and i could have the whole animal, it wouldn’t necessarily have to be just for the meat, other parts of the animal are considered salvageable too but it has to be from causes that are legal. If your transporting a rack from out of state to within Iowas borders it has to acompany some sort of paper saying its from a salvage, a liscensed kill or from being penraised etc. in order to be legal. Wait until i see Mike the guy who told me that i had to have a liscense for hunting sheds, all this time, 7 years, i thought i had to have one. This is from the dnr’s call i received yesterday.
