This is not a deer hunting story, but a different kind of deer story.

Yesterday after work I headed down to Plum City to get my venison treats from Watkin’s Locker. I stopped up over at my parent who live there and had an early supper with them.
I needed to get home early because of a 4:00 a.m. work start the next morning.

So after supper I headed back home. I was just a couple miles out of Plum City when I came over a hill and noticed a large deer laying dead on the gravel shoulder. It was dark already at that time so I couldn’t tell if it had horns on it or not, but by the body size it caught my interest to turn around at the bottom of the hill and go back and check it out. After I turned around and headed back towards the deer I now noticed it was laying flat out in the right lane of the highway. WHAT THE ….???

I drove up to a driveway at the top of the hill and turned around and pull off the highway near where the deer lied in the highway. I turned on my flashers and walked down the shoulder to where the deer laid in the road. I knew that if I didn’t get the deer off the highway a vehicle would be flying over the hill and pile right into the deer.
So I checked for headlights coming and didn’t see any, so I went out on the road and kicked the deer and nothing happened. I then quickly grabbed both rear legs and slid the deer off on to the shoulder out of traffic.I couldn’t tell if the deer was even still alive?? Just laid there unresponsive. I did find out that it wasn’t even a buck, but one of the biggest does I’ve ever seen.

Well, now what do I do??? I didn’t have a cellphone to call the cops. So I thought about running back to Plum City to call the police, because I knew someone that was looking for venison real bad that would take it. I was standing a few feet away from the deer with my headlights shining on it. I decided before leaving for town I would check the deer once again to see how bad a shape it was in. When I turned around I was floored to see the doe sitting up staring at me!!! Last time I looked she was laying out on all fours with her head lying in the grass. A minute later she was sitting up like she was bedded down on her favorite bluff edge. Her ears were turning every which way, but her eyes were lookin right at me. I now figured that she must have been knocked out… woke up ….and then tried crossing the highway and went right back down on the road and went unconcious.

Well now I have a doe at two feet looking at me wondring…”WHAT THE ….!” I decided that I would see if I could get her up to see how bad she was busted up, because I could see blood in her nostrils! I walked up a kicked her softly in the butt getting her to move towards the ditch and not the highway. Nothing! She just sat there and looked at me!

Another couple minute went by staring at each other and someone drove in behind my truck. I turned around to see if it was a cop or just someone stopping to help. I then turned my head again back to the doe and she got up and ran about ten yards and stood on the ditch bank looking back at me. HHHHMMMM???? I walked a few steps towards the guy that stopped because he saw the deer staring at me when he drove by and decided to turn around to see if I needed help. We walked down to my truck to show him where the doe was standing only to see she was gone for good. I grabbed my flashlight and walked up the the fence line edge of the hayfield above the ditch. No sign of her anywhere!!

I think back now that when the doe got up and only went 10 yards and stopped to look back at me, that maybe she was just thanking me for saving her life! It was only a minute or two after I dragged her off the highway a semi came screaming over the hill. Would not have been good!

I’m just hoping that she only got her bell rung on the highway last night and that she is just having a bad migrane today!

I’ve heard of fellow hunters shooting a deer only to have it wake up and trot off, but I’ve never heard of a deal like this! Just thought you would like to hear of this odd story.

I just somehow pictured the scene from *Tommy Boy* with Chris Farley…

Its a great story, but it would have been as good if you had already loaded it in your car!

It sounds like it took a head impact.. hopefully it will survive.

Zimmy, That’s quite the experience. That was a dangerous situation out on a busy highway. I’m sure after all was said and done you had to feel pretty good about what you just did. Hopefully she can can get to a safe haven and recover from whatever had happen to her. Not only did you maybe save a human life but you gave a not so lucky doe another chance. Hats off!!

A similar thing happened in front of my house two years ago. I heard the impact and went to investigate. The car that hit this doe left the scene. He deer layed motionless in the road next to the curb. Before I turned to go inside and call the law, the doe raised her head. She just sat there looking straight forward, stunned. I moved my truck onto the road behind her with my hazards flashing so motorists would slow and not hit her or spook her and have her run into another vehicle. I called the law. They arrived about 90 minutes later, the doe still sitting there. Blood was now visible in the roadway, coming from a rear leg. I asked the officer to shoot her and told him I would claim her. He refused. Long story short, he approached, the deer struggled up, and limped away, across the yard and into the timber. Next morning I followed her trail, there was a little blood. I hoped to find her dead and then take her home. I never found her. I am sure the coyotes feasted well that night. I should have just humanely killed her myself, tagged her, and utilized the venison.

I had this happen to me about 7 or 8 years ago. I was cruising down hwy 55, next to Koronis. A doe darts out and “BAM” she hits the front of my dakota, cartwheels up over the windshield, her legs dent the psgr side of my box. I stop, turn around, and shes laying in the ditch. I give her a little kick, and she sits up, then she sits there for about 2 minutes, then I decide to give her another kick, she gets up, and runs off into the treeline. I watched her for about another 5 minutes, as she was watching me. Then she turned and walked out of site. I will never forget that day.
