    Larry’s Deer

Our party did alright this year in Iowa. No monsters but a couple decent bucks, a small buck, and 4 does. We hunted hard for 5 days and seen some real nice deer. The deer were thick but getting nice bucks in a good shot situation was hard. Seen alot at 150 yard going 90 mph. We had a really nice 10 pointer but he was not a 10 pointer for being dumb. We were trying to get a shot at a cripple doe. We saw it in my uncles yard and followed into pasture land with a 300 yard wooded draw. It was pretty open with little underbrush. The plan was for me to post the end that we saw her go in and he was going to drive down to the other end and walk it back to me in hopes of getting the doe. Well he got out of the truck and took about 10 steps and saw a massive 10 pointer bedded behind a large pile of cut timber at the other end of the draw. He crawled on his hands and knees through a CRP field and came up to a 6 strand fence. He could not go over so he slide under and must have made a little noise. He got up just to see the buck walking towards me and disappear into the draw. I was waiting for the doe and almost dropped my gun when I saw bits and pieces of him through the only underbrush in the area. He winded me and shot off like a rocket. Two more steps and I had a shot but he outsmarted me this time. He flew by my uncle at 200 yards and I am sure just looked back and laughed. Hope he makes it to next year. My uncles both took decent deer. We also did our part for Iowa conservation and harvested 4 does, with my doe going 140 lbs+. The bonus was the day before we left, with a few roosters and quail. I always love those Iowa trips!
