Well, things didn’t go exactly how I planned today, but it DEFINETELY was a success!! I had really hoped that my brother would get a good shot at a buck today, he didn’t but helped me in harvesting mine. We made three of four drives in the morning, in the frigid temps. The wind was brutal, but we still kept hunting. The drive started out with Dad, my brother, and a friend pushing a chunk of timber that we ended with yesterday. We had a pretty good idea there were some bucks in this particular chunk. I set up, along a fenceline, and sat down and began glassing the area. I spotted five bucks bedded down on the sun swept side of a switchgrass/timber edgeline. Gabe was walking towards them, but off to the south of the deer. I knew that movement for me was none to nil, as the deer would surely spot me, and move the wrong way. I was decked out in a huge orange parka coat, so I only moved my had to signal my brother. I signaled that he needed to stop and move to the north to get the bucks up, and heading my way. He understood, took five steps, and up they went. The started heading right inbetween him and I. We both knew, there was no safe shot. They then crossed a deep creek, and all five bucks ran within twenty feet of me, never knowing I was there until, the hurt was on the big boy. I harvested the largest deer, of the five. He is a mature, short, fat face, HUGE neck and body deer.
My bow buck was wide, but this was a beauty. I looked over at my bro, and he gave me the signal that it was clear to fire.
I took aim, and placed my slug perfectly for a double lung shot. (not too hard at that distance!!) The deer hopped the fence, and was done thirty feet from me, and one hundred yards from my brother. He said he never shot, because he knew they would present a perfect shot for me, and didn’t want spook them with shooting.
I am very happy with this shotgun buck!! Thanks Gabe for making it possible! What a brother!
As always, stay safe, and spend time with friends and family. I had an excellent time today with my family and friends!
Now, to tell the wife, that there are going to be two more deer mounts in her house..
