Just wondering if anyone out there hunts the Hay Creek Management area south of Red Wing.
I’ve hunted it 3 years now,and am really frustrated with the lack of deer I’m seeing. I hunt the 3B season and in 3 years I’ve only seen one deer while hunting. I was fortunate enough to harvest that deer, but man it’s been tough for me.
First of all I’ve always been amazed at the lack of hunters in the area. I think it gets very little hunting pressure and the area is really quite large. There is a TON of cover.
I sit on stand mornings and evenings and usually still hunt into the wind during the day. I think I helped someone out last Wednesday, because as I was still hunting, someone in front of me got some shooting – I didn’t see anything.
The area has a lot of well used horse trails. I usually hunt more remote areas that are harder to get to in hopes of doing a little better. Most of the hunters I’ve seen are very near the trails.
I would like to get a group of guys next fall and do some drives – I think it would be productive but it makes me nervous doing drives on state land where I don’t know where other hunters are located.
I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced what I have while hunting this property.
Thanks!
