I’m just stating that other states (Illinois,Iowa,Kansas,Wisc.) grow more, and bigger bucks than MN.

I’m with ya G. I asked the question because there are plenty of Bucks like that and Bigger in MN. Not taking anything away from that buck or Love to Troll’s accomplishment, because that buck is a HOGG and a buck of a lifetime especailly with BOW I’m just saying I have seen many deer that size in MN on the hoof and harvested here in MN and just posted another Giant 8 that was almost that same size, but netted in the 155″ category, that was shot just south of the Cities. I’m not arguing with you, but too many people believe, think or are under the impression there are no or very few big bucks in MN and that is just not True. Right G & GMan.

The biggest bucks I have seen harvested this year have came from MN. That womans 224″ bow kill from NE of the Cities. A memeber in the Deer contesthere @ IDA with a 190″ buck from the Mille Lacs area, the 12 point 24 ” inside spread Buck posted here today, the Detroit Lakes buck taken by Dr. Riddle posted here that grossed 191 with 29″ main beams and 24″ spread, Steve Huettel’s 8 pointer from SE of the Cities that Grossed 166″ and nets around 155″, the 180″ Ottertail County buck with 28″ spread, posted here. All true giants and you say we do not grow them big or plentiful here in MN

All those buck mentioned above are not only big, but true giants. We are not even talking about the # of big bucks (150″) posted here or taken in MN .

Over the last few years our winters have been like Iowa winters. That has helped out Bucks get much bigger. Northern MN produces lots of monster bucks. However, lots of them die of old age. To much cover. They are there, just hard to find. When I hunting Iowa, I would see these same bucks crossing a field mid day to get to the next wooded patch. In states like Iowa, Southern Illinois, the big guys have to expose themselves if they want to breed, and we all know they do. In MN all the cover makes it tough to find one of those big boys, hard to pattern.

Did I miss it or what was the weight of that monster. Looks like a big body too. Nice work. He will look great on the wall. It will be hard to embellish on that story.

The three main criteria for big bucks is genetics, food supply, and the ability to live to a mature age. I have no doubt that Minnesota has plenty of genetically superior deer. The food supply for most of the Midwest states is very similar. Frankly, all farm country deer eat like beef cattle, all the alfalfa and corn they can handle.
This only leaves one thing. Bucks have got to live long enough to reach their maximum potential. I, for one, am a big believer in QDM but this does/will not work unless everyone in the area is committed to the program. It is pretty simple…if we don’t shoot all the young bucks they can grow up and become large bucks.
I cannot speak for the north but this is even more important in the farm belt areas where deer are more susceptible to hunters because they do not have large stands of woods in which to hide.
    My two cents.

I have hunted my land for 6 years, and I have yet to see a buck “worthy” of shooting.I have passed on many basket racked bucks all of this time with bow and rifle.I know almost all the neighbors in the area, and none of them have shot a buck of any size for this time also.My guess is that all the basket racks are getting shot by those people who decide to shoot any buck just to say “I got a buck!” If that’s not true these bucks just don’t get any bigger than small 8’s. Southern MN does produce some fine bucks, but it does not seem like other parts of the state fair as well.I do not like the way that MN has it’s rifle season timed with the rut.I wish they would have the rifle season after the rut, or a couple weeks after the normal starting time.I know there are some dandy bucks in MN, but I do not think that we have the #’s that some other states have.
