Rattling, grunt, bleat, still effective now?

Heading out to sit in the stand tomorrow morning, I was wondering if anyone is still rattling, or using a bleat can or anything to attract bucks this far into the season? Haven’t been seeing much so thinking of trying something.

I used calls through out the rifle season, not much response early but late in the season (last weekend) got quite a bit of response. Had several deer bee line in and a few grunt responses, one responded with a grunt about 5 min after I had grunted. He was 40yds away behind some pines, I about crapped my shorts when that deep grunt came from so close!! My heart was a thumping!! He never did reveal himself that time but a few hours later I grunted and along came what should have been a 8pt(missing right side), so he was technically a 4pt from that general direction, prob same deer?? Anyway he got the!!

So using calls worked 4 short days ago. Keep in mind this was in N. Mn.

The Saturday before last I grunted in a buck and rattled in a buck. I was not able to go this past weekend but have used both grunt tube and antlers effectively right into December. Not all does begin their estrus at the same time and there are those does that either didn’t get bred or were not old enough 28 days ago and these deer will start their estrus cycle soon. Once the rut starts it can be pretty much continuous right up through December. Actually rattling is very effective during the later rut simply because there are fewer does in estrus. Bucks will fight more now for a doe than they did when the receptive does were in greater numbers. Since “hot” does are fewer every buck within ear shot of your rattling will investigate. This time of the year you want to rattle as loud as possible as this reflects the intensity that the bucks fight with this time of the year. In the late pre-rut and the early part of the rut you can “tickle” your rattling antlers and get great results as most bucks aren’t really fighting but only sparring. This time of the season they aren’t playing around. Just don’t overdo it. I seldom grunt unless I actually see a buck. The low-frequency noise from a grunt tube does not carry very far anyway. I believe grunt tubes are really only effective on deer inside of 75 yards simply because the sound doesn’t carry any further.

IT’ll be better more and more as we go through the next week or two. The more does that get bred the better chance to catch a big one looking. You’ll always rattle in the dinks no matter the time but the last two weeks can be a tough time to call a big buck in as they usually have a girl thet’re seeing, as well as many more in their black book to visit. But now they will be getting back to having to look a little more again. Good time to try.

Calls and grunts work until they drop thier antlers in late winter, thier always looking to breed until they drop thier antlers, then its over until next year starts. They just began to breed and theres alot of time left so when hes done with the doe hes with hes off looking for another one, they go looking and competing with other bucks doing the same right away. I once seen a fawn come from some wild raspberries after i started grunting that still had its spots, hard to believe but true, it scared it, got off its bed and ran and this was in late december so that means the doe that had her got bred in very late winter so they breed until thier antlers drop and the late born fawns are done coming in heat. I use a doe bleat call later in the season instead of ratteling and grunting so much but the bucks are still prime right now so calling anyway would be ok, thier still competing for the doe’s.

I have been using the Buck Roar this year. Man is that a nice call. You can really get the sound out there. I grunted in a nice 8 from about 300 yards the other day. He came a running BIG TIME. That made my day. I really like that Buck Roar, it made a big difference this year. It works really good if you are hunting an opening or an area where you need to get some sound out there.

I used to get frustrated at my Grunt because you could see the deer and no matter how loud you blew it they could not hear it. Not this year, that sucker is loud!!

just a quick report..was on stand yesterday all day but 2 hours…(i gotta feed this body)….and had 3 different bucks just dogging down on the does all over grunting non stop and out of breath both of them from charging around ….snort wheezed the one and it got nervous and ran but the basket 8 came in on a string an hour later cruising by on a trail..was a decent buck but not what I wanted yet but he comes by again when i have the smoke pole and it might be a different story i think….rattling brought in the smallest racked fork i have ever seen though it was a buck with rack busted off because if his body size until i saw him turn his head….the ears were blocking his rack he sure had his way with the ladies out in the pasture though and they say size matters haha jk

I’m a rookie to say the least but I used grunting and rattling and it didn’t seem to hurt the number of deer that we saw today, if it didn’t make it actually better. They didn’t come running right away, but I’d lay out a series of grunt calls and a half hour later a group of 3-6 does would come running. We only saw 1 buck today and it was well out of range and chasing 2 does so there was no shot opportunity. In one of the several groups of 3-5 does that came in, there was one really big doe. It sucked though, because we were down on the ground behind a tree overlooking the valley (we were in the tree stand all morning so we wanted to change it up and this was actually where we saw the most deer) but anyway, The group was coming straight down the ridgeroad and we could hear them just 20 yds away, but couldn’t see them, so i was forced to stand up, i had no choice! I had a perfect broadside shot at a medium sized doe, but with 24 lbs of venison in my freezer right now, i was going to see if i could find a bigger one. It came out but saw me and i coudln’t get the gun up and she ran away along with the rest. Anyway, we didn’t shoot anything, but man we saw a lot of deer and could have shot a few different does. I personally think that the calling and rattling that I did helped a little at least, and gave a little confidence maybe too.
