Scoring a deer?

There has recently been many posts asking others to score thier deer. I myself do not know the techniques in scoring and just estimate according to what i have previously seen or heard.

So, what are the things you look for while scoring a deer and how do you measure that? Size, length, width, # of points and how long? How do you accuratly measure a score?

Thanks for asking and for posting the answer. I had seen the rules before, but lost them.

What is the best technique for actually measuring the rack. I know a tape measure is clumsy. I would think taping string to the rack and then measuring the string might work? Does the line that you measure half to go through the middle of the antler? One racks, especially large or non-typical racks, it would make a big difference if you measured one the inside (shorter) or outside (longer) of a curve. What is proper?

When measuring main beams you measure outside of the main beam starting from back of the base and running a stiff string (doesn’t stretch) along the outside middle to the end of the beam. Same deal with points also.

For “official” scoring you need to use a metal tape measure (3/8″ wide I believe), and a piece of non-stretchable cord (don’t remember the name). If you go to the Pope and Young website and look at the scoring page it will show you the tools you need. You can also download the scoring pages. After doing a few you can get within 4-8 inches of the actual score. At least I can. I’m usually pretty close.

Officially I believe it is a 1/2″ metal tape that is used for scoring.

I was wrong about the 1/2″ tape. Boone and Crocket states it must be a 1/4″ metal tape. Sorry about that.

I guess I do not worry so much about the tape I use, because officially…………. my measurements do not count.

I’m pretty obsessed with # of inches on racks, but that still does not deem what is a trophy to me or not.

I know exactly what you mean. When I’m hunting I will look at bucks and estimate if he is a 120 inch or 150 inch class deer or whatever inch class I estimate him to fall in. I can’t really say that this is what determines whether or not the deer is a trophy to me because that is something all together different. My most prized trophy is a little 6-point buck that was my first deer ever taken with a bow in my first year of archery hunting. I have taken several bigger bucks since then but none are as much of a trophy to me as that little 6 point is.
