For sale one XL Scent Blocker, lightweight Jack….. er

OK, I’ve been duped. I have both the big brands I also have an old miltary jacket, carbon lined, that weighs about 40 lbs…. here’s another secret… deer are color blind, and the different shapes , mossy oak to regular military style do not matter. It makes it more fun, to spend the extra money…

I have always thought that scent block clothing was nothing more than another gimmic. I do wash all of the clothing I wear while bow hunting in a detergent that is supposed to remove human scent and UV reflecting properties. I don’t know if it really works but I have read that deer can see reflected UV light which is why I use the stuff. I know that unless you can learn how not to breathe when a deer is down wind from you that they will smell you no matter what you are wearing. Just last weekend I had a doe and fawn lingering around the tree I was sitting in for close to 2 hours. When they finally got down wind of me the doe began to stomp her hoof telling me that she had caught wind of me. All my clothing had been washed and I had showered with a no-scent soap. The only thing that I could not cover was the smell of my breath which I believe she had gotten a whiff of. She did not run away but instead continued browsing occasionally catching another whiff of me and stomping the ground. During the rut it is the does I do not wish to spook because if you have does around you will eventually see bucks. Bucks this time of the year are pretty careless when it comes to what they smell. I had an 8 pointer cross my scent and never bat an eye but yet the doe was able to smell me. Bucks get pretty stupid this time of the year and after many years of bow hunting I have learned not to be as concerned about my scent when bucks are in the vicinity as I am when does are around.

That artical makes perfect sense! I “watch” family members and friends get off work, in their stinky work boots, stained jeans, old carharrt jacket, stinking of a long days work go out and spear deer time and time again! NO CAMO,scents, expensive bows and clothing! Or, my old coworker who would leave work, diesel mechanic, head straight to has stand stinking of diesel and spear deer on a regular basis! I was always in disbelief when he would were those diesel saturated cloths and shoot deer. No kidding!! I’m a believer in scent killers”Scent killers Autumn formula” to be exact , but there are so many gimmics out there. The market has everyone so worried about spooking that chance in a lifetime buck through scent and camoflage, that almost all buy into it, to a certain extent. great article, makes perfect sense.

P.S. watched “dream season” the other day, the teams were bragging up one of the carbon suits, how great they are, how well they work…OF course they’re great, you were just handed a free suit!! The same thing goes on here with a bunch of guys that brag up certain products, not necessarily because they work, but because they WERE handed free equipment, all part of the “game”!!

“From the minute the clothing is manufactured, it begins to adsorb “stink” and continues to adsorb “stink” while awaiting an ignorant, misinformed consumer to purchase it. It is likely that the activated-carbon contained in the garment is already completely saturated with “stink” upon being purchased.”

I tried to tell a buddy this when he went out and bought a new Scent Lock suit

I think it is great!! The old camo I bought in high school still gets used today! The only scent cover I use is free. I just hang em from a tree in the woods! Before I walk to my stand I grab a hand full of rotten leaves and stuff and rub them all over my boots and lower pant leg. Seems to work pretty good. I had 4 little bucks walk right up the trail I used to get to my stand. They had there nose to the ground sniffing away but never even noticed I was at full draw thinking a couple more years and you would be DINNER!!

    Thanks for that post.

Don’t do much bow hunting… but I know for a fact that I have shot 2 deer within minutes of putting out a cigarrette in my deer stand… and one I took with it hanging out of my mouth (didn’t want to spend the extra “movements” and chancing him seeing me). I don’t believe in the scent thing.

Well yes , this is something I take very seriously. Hang on this is a long but very informative post.

First of all, are you guys going to believe one guys “OPINION”?????? Do any of you know this guy??? Do you know his background or perhaps he ahas a alteriro motive?? Maybe he works with or knows someone that is a competitor of Carbon Clothes? Perhaps he was a disgruntled employee??? I sure don’t the whole story behind him, but before I would base or switch my opinion of anything or form a opinion of something, I sure would like to have more data from a known source or at least have multiple sources. You guys have every right to believe what you want, but I have a feeling you “nay sayers” that are so quick to jump on his band wagon because these clothes did not work for you or your approach, might just be a little trigger happy to do so because of your failure. That is fine with me, that will just leave more deer for me. Bird Dog I am in no way affiliated with any of the Carbon Clothes Companies, nor do they give me anything in return for my backing for their products.

Secondly, for those of you that have shot Deer “with a cigarette” hanging from your mouth or have Diesel Mechanic as your job. How many of those Deer you shot were down wind of you???? Is it possible these deer were up wind of you??? Kind of hard to smell you of they are not down wind. I’m not saying it isn’t possible that a deer was shot down wind from you guy, there are to many variables ( a deer being pushed, up thermals, a love crazed buck, etc), but day in day out having those odors is probably not going to get the job done.

Are these Carbon clothes for everyone?? Definitely not, I would only suggest buying them if you are seriously committed and willing to take steps others don’t. This is where you will see a big difference in the performance of the CARBON CLOTHES. Can it help the less committed Hunter???? Yes you bet it can help, but again day in day out you will not beat the deer’s nose. How many deer’s nose have you guys that are bashing these carbon clothes beaten the last year or two wearing normal clothes??? Again, possibly a few due to some of the circumstance sated above, but probably not many. I actually expect to beat deer’s nose just about every time. I usually know before hand if I will beat that deer’s nose or not, just on my confidence level of my scent protection. Have my clothes been recharged recently? Have I sweated on my way in? Do I have any equipment with that has not been sprayed down or scent free? I can tell you I have beaten many deer’s nose in the last few years since I have started using Carbon Clothing. I would not hesitate to say 90% of them. Everything from a weary old does to mature bucks with a clear mind. Back a few years ago before I wore Carbon Clothes used to wash my clothes, hang them out to dry, etc, do all the things I do now and be almost as meticulous as I am now. I would not beat that many noses, but might get away for a longer period of time before they would bust me. Now, I follow a strict regimen of scent control process that is not just my carbon clothing, but that is a big part of it that allows me to go undetected and day in day out beat the noses form those wear ol’ does to those mature bruisers. This strict regimen is a real pain in the , a bit overwhelming and demanding but WELL WORTH IT TO ME.

As they say proof is in the pudding. I have a 176″ buck on the wall to prove it, and no I do not get JACK CRAP from Scent Blocker or Scent-Lok. If I did not have that group of does (down wind of me) by me for 15 minutes grazing back off the field edge @ 2pm. I would never have had my encounter with Mr. Big. He came in down wind of me and the does scent checking during the 2nd rut. I ended up arrowed that buck @ 15 yards. Not that much of a feat to beat his nose as he was love struck, but to have that group of does and fawns down wind of me that long and never even get a whiff of my scent is something remarkable. Was I able to do this JUST because of my Carbon Clothing?? No, but it was a big part of it and I know for a fact, I would have never of gotten that opportunity with out my strict scent control regimen and my carbon clothing. I have many other stories where I was under cover and beat the nose of a weary whitetails, but I want to finish wiritng this today.

These Carbon clothes work only if you follow strict rules behind them. You just can’t pull them up and over you regular clothes go and sit and have deer down wind of you with out getting busted. As I have said many times on here. There is a ton of that goes along with these clothes, but having these clothes part of your arsenal, along with keeping everything Scent Free will help you obtain the ability to beat the noses of does and bucks. Taking a shower and washing with the right soaps, putting your scent free clothes on in the field away from your truck, not sweating getting to your stand, etc. is all a big hassle that most of us like to take short cuts or corners and then complain that these clothes do not work. Do these clothes work as well as the Manufacturers say??? In my opinion No, but they do work if you follow a strict regimen. Do they eliminate Scent??? In my opinion, NO. They reduce the amount of scent particles that reach the deer’s nose, telling the deer you are a vast distance away, so the deer could care less and not be alarmed. But in reality you may be only 30 yards away.

One vital thing most people forget is their head and breath. The largest percentage of scent emitted is through your head and breath. They say up to 80%., yet most hunters do nothing to mask or eliminate these areas. I wear carbon lined facemasks and hats to help, but also brush my teeth wit baking soda and then chew the different types of gums that have come out the last few years. I still religiously hunt the wind, but will push then envelop when called for. However, we all know things do not always go as planned and deer do not always follow the trails we think they should be coming in on, for this reason I will still go through my strict scent control regimen and continue to both get close to mature deer and even more important, stay close to these bruisers. People have often asked my knack of harvesting or seeing big bucks. Well the above is it is it, “get close to mature deer and even more important, stay close to these bruisers”. Staying undetected and not ever letting those bucks know of my presence in their back yard. This means while in the stand and also to and from the stand. This is where most other hunters tend over look or get lazy.

So if all of you want to believe one guys opinion and have no information on him or his credentials, his motivation or where he comes from other than he works with a department that is involved with carbon, and he is a “Biologist and environmentalist” feel free. I rather base my opinions on my own research and that of others that are proven in the industry. Next you might as well tell me you believe D-Norts explanation on the migration movement of Walleyes and that you can not catch them below the dam down by Everts in the Spring. To each their own, but I just think most of you above are a little quick “to point the finger.” Good luck hunting, be safe and may the “good book” be in your future.

    Rob,
Is it possible that without this carbon filled outerwear you could still beat the deer’s nose by just following your scent free program? Is it possible that by doing everything that you do now, but with regular clothing you could still be scent free?
It seems like this gentleman makes a good valid argument about the scent. I think it’s possible to still have a successful hunt without spending the extra dough on the scent free clothing. Have you always worn the scent free clothing when you take a deer? It would be interesting to do an experiment following your regimen of keeping yourself from being scented, but without the carbon lined clothing.

Yes, I think it is possible, but you will not be able to do it day in day out, like I’m able to accomplish now. Remember I used to do all the other steps besides Carbon Clothes for about 5 years. Yes, I would beat a nose here and there or they would not wind me as quick. But like I said, when my confidence is high in my protection. I have no doubt I’m going to get by a deer’s nose down wind of me.

Very true. No doubt you can have a successful hunt with out buying the Carbon Clothing. I cherish every moment I have in the woods pursuing monster bucks and mature does. Therefore, my game plan is to increase the odds an do everything in my power to do so. So this whole strict scent control regimen is part of my package and increases my odds of harvesting a mature deer. Let’s remember I’m not only in for it for that sit, but others also. Staying undetected and leaving no or minimal trace of your presence while you are in stand and long after you leave. Keeping that mature buck or bucks in your area is key to being able to harvest big whitetails consistently. That is my goal, what I’m after and the reason I go through what I do. I know everyone else may not be that involved, or have different objectives, but that is what I seek. Remeber these deer do not always come in where we plan on them comng in. We can hunt the wind all the time, but it does not mean a deer will alaways be on that trail. I can’t tell you how many time sa buck even a doe has just rummaged through the woods on me. Also BUcks Ususaly use the down wind sides of trails to pick up any scent that wa son the trail.

Have you always worn the scent free clothing when you take a deer?

My clothing has always been scent free, along with my equipment, but I have not always worn Scent Blocking or Carbon Lined Clothing. I know my last post was long, but I did talk about it in there, perhaps it was clear to me but not the viewing public. But to sum it up. I have logged many hours in the tree stand in both scenarios you talk about and I jus bought another Scent Blocker suit this Fall and also bought Stacie one. So in my world, Yes, carbon lined clothes dowork with out a doubt, if you follow certain steps.

here is form my post above on this subject.

Back a few years ago before I wore Carbon Clothes, I used to wash my clothes, hang them out to dry, etc, do all the things I do now and be almost as meticulous as I am now.
