BOW HUNTING DURING GUN SEASON??

I have bow hunted during the gun season many times in the past. I too hunt about seven hundred acres of private land near Park Rapids. Even with three other gun hunters on our land deer were still patternable during the first few days. But it all seems to change after a few days of gun fire. They lose all normal patterns and really start to get on edge. Pinch points near bedding areas always seem to produce during all stages of the rut, even with guns blazing away. One last thing try hunting mid day, I know its hard but if you can stay put it will often pay off when other people are in taking their afternoon snooze. Now heres the kicker; I picked the gun back up about three years ago. I had a very large buck, close to 170 chasing a doe around the forest. I had that dude past my stand a half dozen times with no shot. The last fly by he jumped over the fence and stopped broadside at seventy yards. He searched for that doe for a good five minutes. Finally he heard some movement farther up in the neighbors property and took off in that direction. You know the rest of the story. A couple minutes later BANG! I now hunt with a muzzle loader during gun season. It gives me a little extra for a week! Good luck this year!

November 1, 2006 at 2:33 pm #23682Down here in Iowa the bow season is closed during the 1st and 2nd shotgun seasons. I would not bow hunt during gun season even if the bow season remained open. There are just too-many gun hunters that will drive through properties that they do not have permission to be on. Last year I gun hunted first season and it was the only year a large group of gun hunters has not driven through the property that I hunt (at least not when I was in my stand). The landowners do not seem to care as they want to eradicate as many deer as possible. The group that hunts the adjoining property just keeps on driving right through the land that I am hunting. One year one of the hunters asked if I had permission to hunt there. I asked him if he knew who’s land he was on. He thought that he was still on the adjoining property. Please be very careful if bow hunting during gun season. At least wear blaze orange on your way to and from your stand as there are some idiots out there that will take shots at anything moving that is not wearing blaze orange.

November 1, 2006 at 3:11 pm #23687you have to learn to use gun hunters to your advantage I have bowhunted during gun season most gun hunters sit where the can see very far. If you look for trails that you cant see far and they have alot of cover to travel seems to work good. It is a hit or miss deal though guns are hard to compete with! Ask an indian.

November 1, 2006 at 3:41 pm #23690The bucks are still in the rut! It is just a matter of being where they will be once they are pressured. I choose to put down my bow during the gun season. But, my neighbor still bow hunts during the gun season. He usually ends up he seeing a lot of nice bucks but doesn’t get a shot. They are usually on a hot doe or being chased, both of which can make for tough bow shots.
I agree, if you are set on bowhunting, get in early in the AM and get in very deep. A heavily used trail along the edge of the swamp is a great spot. Or, that little island with trees on it out in the middle of a huge cattail swamp. Those would be the two best spots I can think to be while bowhunting during the gun season.

November 1, 2006 at 4:15 pm #23694I’m with ya Scott. Using a bow during gun season, would be like using a jiggle stick for fall night trolling I love bow hunting, but I have nothing against upgrading to the 700 when I can. Good luck to all this weekend, no matter what your shooting !!!
