This is my first post on IDA. Have been just an observer for a year or so, but a conversation I had with a co-worker has wondering about other opinions. We will be coming into a full moon phase right on the opening weekend of gun season. How will this affect the deer movement? He suggested that they will not move much during the day, because they will be moving more at night because it will be brighter. I don’t necessarily agree with this. I believe that they will be moving just due to the fact they will be in full rut.

    Farmboy,
WELCOME TO IDA,, REport and post often, let us know how your Deer season goes for you…
I’d have to say they will move more at night, but day time can see movement also, esp as they will be pushed and moved by other hunters too.
Back in the early 1980’s I used to see friends in Claremont, and almost every night we would drive the dirt roads south of town in the Wildlife areas. I have never seen so many trophy bucks on the hoof as that area..
    Good Luck.

I think they will move more at night than if it were a quarter or new moon but with that being said there are many other factors. I would not stay at home just because of a full moon. Colder the better if they have to get up in the middle of the day great! The rut is definatly working for you Bucks will get up in the middle of the day to keep tabs or to breed. Plus other hunters will move and push deer all over the place! I would definatly get in the stand!!

I agree basically with the above posts. I don’t know what kind of area you hunt. If you have people that drive or if there are a bunch of people around or do you sit all day in a huge woods by yourself? I know where I am they will still be moving around…from pressure and because I know my heard fairly well. The moon does play a part, but so does the end of the rut….

    Welcome to IDA Farmboy!!!
Full moon or no full moon during the gun season I will be in the woods all day, you can not shoot a buck if you head back to camp for lunch. Time and time again during the rut I have seen the most buck movement between the hours of 10am and 2pm.
Good luck and remember please lets be safe out there.

Well stated Steve. I shot 3 bucks in the last 3 years, all between the hours of 10-2. All following does or scent wicks.

Gettem while they’re out lookin for the ladies!!!
