I hunt on private land I have hunted for 25 years. It is an area that a lot of people talk about or have heard about being good quality hunting with huge bucks and lots of turkeys etc. I am curious if it is me or perhaps something I am overlooking when scouting this area, perhaps because I am use to it or I think I know where the deer travel. I have spent several nights in the stand and have seen only a couple of deer. Any suggestions or ideas.

I now have quite a collection of trail camera’s out and the deer are there, they are moving and feeding at night right now.

The same thing happens every year. The 2 1/2 weeks after the leaves fall off the trees is a tough time, we call it the LULL. It happens every year, just like clock work, so we have named it.

As buck activity increases over the next two weeks you will start seeing more deer during daylight hours. I don’t even hunt around home until Halloween, that is the first day I will hunt around here.

I am assuming that you are using proper scent control clothing, and most importantly using wind direction to your advantage..Other factors may be if the corn is still in…many times they will sit in there until pushed out by combines, and even if they do come out, it is usually later in the evening, just before dark to make their scrapes/rubs…which I might say is in full swing right now..at least where I hunt (just a little south of Lake City). The breeding season with some does has already begun, so that alone will get the bucks to start moving a little earlier…Also, if you haven’t ever used a scrape dripper, I would try one out. This conditions the dominant buck to tend to their scrapes during daylight hours to check for intruders. If you know you are in a good deer area, keep your patience and don’t sit in a stand (even if it’s your favorite) if the wind direction is bad…Also, use of decoys this time of year is lethal. Good luck..this is the time of year we’ve been waiting for.

I was down in the Lake City area for pheasant opener and a friend of mine has 4 or 5 cameras up on private land. We ran out and picked up all of the cards because of the slow pheasant hunting. Out of about 20 different pictures of about 6 or 7 different bucks, only one of the pictures was in daylight. I agree, give the farmers some time to combine the corn and in a week or two they will be out during the daylight. Even though you arent seeing much, isn’t sitting in a deer stand one of the best things a person can possibly do?! Good luck!
