This past sunday the old man and I were out hunting. We had a steady west wind all night (never swirled). At about 6:15 I here at least one if not 2 deer blowing straight to my west. To me it sounded as if they were about 200 yards away. I entered my stand coming from the east so they did not cross my trail. There is no other access to this spot other than the road I walked in on and nobody else came down in. I did not see any deer the rest of the night. I am totaly confused as to what this was all about.

    Anybody have any suggustions?

If you ever watch a balloon that is tied to fishing line, the wind is always shifting. Alot of people including me, make the mistake of assuming if the wind is blowing from the west, in is only carrying scent to the east. This is simply un-true, the wind may only feel like it is blowing from the west, but in reality, there are always currents of wind flowing every which way.. I could be totally wrong- but I have studied this tremendously…

I would agree with Luke on this. Also, with the time of day,6:15, when the air begins to cool, it will do some goofy things. I know out west, when it gets cool in the evening , the currents can switch to straight down the mountains.

Yup, air currents can do some pretty strange things. Cold air falls and warm air rises so when you are sitting in your stand on a cold morning your scent is heading downhill until the sun warms the air. Winds are so unpredictable. In one of my favorite stands on top of a hill I can get a NE wind when the wind is actually blowing out of the NW. The canyon behind me catches the NW wind where it meets the river and channels it right up the valley.

I agree with others, however, it could hav ebeen something mor esimple. More times than not, when I have had this happen to me, it was because someone else was up wind of the deer and tresspassing and or hunting on our land.

    Could this of happened?

Well the wind swirling thing may be a thought but I would have been slightly down hill from the deer and in open terrain. 40 yard wide 800yards deep slashings with open swamp all around the rest. It was in the evening so the colder air should have been pushed down which in term should have been going away from them, correct? To answer your question lip of another hunter or someone being around I would have to say no. Only because you would have to walk over 3 miles through knee to waist deep swamp to come even close to where I was. At this point I would say im still confused, but I will put the blame on the wind swirling unless someone else has a thought

The deer that snorted, could have very possibly been snorting at something besides you Judging by your pic and description I would say that was the case. Coyotes, other deer, or a host of other things will make deer snort.

I have seen bucks this year split a fawn from the mama and she has blown to get back together with it. And many times before I have seen them do this too find each other(mama and fawns)I used to think it was just an alarm sound but…………..nope. good luck
