30-06 and 7mm wsm have worked very well for me since the “beginning”

I’m far from a rifle man, so when I chose my one rifle I wanted to chose soemthing for all game amd a good all around gun. I was looking at the 30.06 (which would have been perfect if I was just hutning MN), but wanted something to shoot out west (ND, SD, Montana, Idaho) for Muleys, Whitetail, and Elk). I liked the fast flat shooting of the 7MM Mag. The shots out there can be a little longer. I paired it up with a Burris scope with the Boone & Crockett Reticle and their is no guessing how high to hold on a deer @ 300 yards.

Lip, I also wanted a caliber for out west (still holding out for that trip) so I got the 30-06. I was told my 270 was a little under gunning out there, so I did some research, and found that the 06 was by far the caliber of choice. It is suppose to be good to 300 yards, paired with my Buckmaster scope. The range I am a member at, only goes to 200 yards, and it is deadly at that range. Hope it works for me.

BIG G, I’m not bashing that caliber at all. That is probably the best all around caliber, and will do the job every time. Like I said, I’m not a rifle man and do not get to spend a lot of time with my Gun, due to the bow. I wanted something flatter shooting when and if I had to reach out to touch something. That is the reason I chose the 7mm mag caliber along with the speed of that round (speed kills ). I chose that caliber in a Winchester Model 70 in bolt action, qouted as being the rifle of the century.
I have yet to shoot Mr. Big with it, but have tested her out on Mrs. Big I might get my chance this Fall in SD or ND

Lip, I didn’t think you were bashing, just wondering why I didn’t hear more about the 7mm, thats all. Is that a newer caliber ? I’m no gun nut either, bows rule !!!

The few guys that I know that live out west, mainly Montana, and hunt muley’s and elk all carry .300 or .300 WSM and they never leave home without it. I’ve brought a .300 WSM out there the last 2 years, which I thought might be over kill on muley’s but it wasn’t too bad if you match up the right bullet with the game you are hunting. When asking the locals why the .300 is so popular they always say they don’t want tracking jobs. Which makes sense given the amount of country you’re dealing with. I learned the hard way what a muley can do when wounded last year. Stopping an animal in its tracks out there can often times be the difference in dragging the animal out to a road or an all day(atleast) packing out job, elk and deer both. My buddy out there always says, any elk(whole) you can get into the back of the truck is a good elk.

Tons of good options out there, but if you do the bulk of your hunting in the midwest then get a 30-06! It will suffice out west for the few, if any, times you hunt out there. It has such a wide range of loads available a guy can hunt everthing from coyotes to moose with it…..and that is firsthand knowledge. When it comes time to trade or sell you won’t have any problems getting rid of it….do yourself a favor and buy a 30-06, you won’t be sorry!

The 7mm mag is a great all around caliber. It is flat shooting, hard hitting, and very accurate.

Howsabout a .505 Gibbs? I’ll bet you’ll kill em if you hit em (probably gut, skin, and process too)
I’m Partial to my .270 Interarms Mark X with Mannlicher stock. There isn’t enough money on this site to purchase this gun from me. Tackdriver@ 300-325 year in and year out.

I have to say my .300 WSM Model 70 is awesome. It takes a deer nicely with a lighter 160 grain ballistic tip. I’ve never used it out west, but a cousin used it to take a nice 6×6 elk two years ago. He was using a 180 grain failsafe. It made a very nice hole and was taken at 322 yds. So use what ever works…
