Depending on the range a shotgun is effective. If I had the rifle option I’d use my 300 Win Mag. I have shot alot of deer with the trusty 870 Wingmaster.

The 30.06 is a pretty good all around versitile rifle.

I would use the one you shot best. Accuracy is the most important thing.

Your 30-30 is like you said a good “brush gun”. You aren’t going to be able to shoot really acurate over 150 yds really. I think your 380 is a little over kill, but would get the job done. I suggest using a lighter grain bullet…and one that doesn’t expand rapidly. I’m assuming you will hunt deer and you don’t need to leave a big hole. The shot gun is also a very good weapon…but again range is limited.

If you are looking for a gun…I’d say 30-06 or 270 or 243 would work out just fine…

270 or 243 I think anything bigger than a 270 is over kill, as long as you shot premium bullets. My brother shoots a 270 with hornady sst bullets and the do the job. I shot the 243 with the same bullets and also does the job. But we also know how to shoot are guns. Which I think a lot people dont take the time to shot.

7 MM is a great overall rifle as well.

I used a Remington 30-06 for years but the new Remington 700 BDL 7MM is a great gun, much more accurate than the 30-06 in my case.

    Have you ever tried a:

Uzi, radar, laser, triple barrel, double scoped, heat seeking shotgun. I heard they work the best for “da tirdy pointers” over der in Wisconsin.

    I prefer to use W.W.(whitetail widowmaker)in 7mm Rem Mag.
As far as “overkill” I have never seen a deer that was “to dead”

I have a Remington 30-06, and a Rem 8400 in 270. The 270 works great for taking down deer.
