Well kind-of! One of my uncles is raising a few deer that were abandoned by their mother, two are bucks, and one is a female. They have them in a small pen now- but they are building a five acre pen for them soon. They will never be shot- they are just pets- It is also working out really well for my uncle because he is a taxidermist, and now he will be able to really study how they look.

I thought they were neat so I wanted to share a photo- even though I didn’t take a very good picture.

QUESTION…………..Did your uncle contact the DNR of your state about these cute little waifs. I don’t want to rain on your or his parade but I’m quite sure that in Wisconsin, unless you have a license, they will not allow you to keep them. Iowa may be different. I would hate to see someone invest time and money in fencing an area and have someone come in and say it’s not legal. I hope things work out for the best.

I was going to say the same thing as RKD-Jim. There was a guy around here that nursed a fawn back to good health and it became a “pet.” He never had the thing penned up or anything, the deer just never left his place. Apparently somebody turned him in and the NGPC removed the deer and I heard fined him. Not sure on the fine, however. Be careful.

Mossy- I think they are about 10-15 pounds, they are still bottle fed-

And he has contacted the DNR and everything is “a-ok”!!

Hey Luke…back in the turn of the century…teachers at school always told us to leave birds and animals alone if their parents were killed or not around.

This thinking must have changed at some point.

Any way of finding out what the dnr’s offical thought are on this??

    Off fishing…I’ll check back later.

PS what a great oppertunity for the kids in the area to help raise a deer!

Yeah, that is the case..the DNR was actually called in this instance- the momma had came into a fenced in yard and had the fawns, she then obviously couldn’t get them out, as they couldn’t jump the four foot chain link fence)there is only a small opening along the side of the house maybe two foot wide, she must not have been able to figure how to lead them out. The DNR told the people who found them, they can’t go much more than a day or two without food when they are just born- handling them to get them out wasn’t recommended either-
