On noooo, you shot it with a shot-gun though-…shoot them with a bow, that is the challenge! No, I am just kidding, I couldn’t get a shot at my buck this year with a bow… And I hunted really hard!

    Watch the “Iowa” jokes Mike!!!

I know what your saying Luke. Bowhuntings the ultimate, nothing like putting a stand up in a good area and going to the best movies in the woods. My guns are for filling my doe tags then i wait until the last couple days for a buck with my bow. If it looks like maybe the conditions won’t produce a nice buck i’ll fill my tag with a doe if i get a shot.

Mossydan, I do bowhunt also, but have never been drawn in Iowa. I have been hunting down there for 10 years and have been drawn once for archery. Once again another difference from Minnesota. Non-residents can buy archery licenses over the counter. I exclusivly bowhunt in Minnesota. What a rush being 10 yards from a deer and all the other wildlife you see. Last year I saw everything from a bear to a wolf in a matter of 2 weeks in October in northern Minnesota. Only four months away!

You’ve only been drawn 1 time in 10 years? I would call the Iowa DNR and ask them whats up? Like if you are filling out the application wrong or something. Iowa drawn is usually an every other year drawn, every 3 for sure. You might be doing something wrong.

Sorry, I may have misread your post. You must be doing some gun hunting in those years too.

Whitetails, yes I have pretty much gave up on archery hunting. I went to gun hunting so I could go down there more often. They only give 576 tags in my zone. And last time I checked about 3000 people applied. My math puts me there every 5 years. And now I hear that you can buy preference points to move you up the ladder. Well I can barely afford it now, I would never be able to afford buying my way in. I have to ask what is Iowa doing with all of this money. Have hunted down there for almost 20 years and the only time I have seen a warden is when my cousin in the Air Force shot a deer and we had to call them to come out and tag it. They looked at his leave papers and were out of there. They never looked at any licenses. Don’t get me wrong, I love hunting in Iowa, but there has to be a limit on how high the licenses go. And auctioning off preference points is not a good ethical practice in my book. Leave that to the hunting ranches! And Luke if you want to come up to Minnesota bowhunting I will show you some new challenges, they are called bogs, swamps, and heavy timber. They will give you a new perspective on farm country hunting. I plan on applying for a bow license in Iowa every year from here on out and biting the bullet

I think applying for only a prefrence point, is $10 if I remember right. I hear you though, its a heck of a hit on the pocket book. What zone do you apply for? Usually 2 pref points will get you a tag in most zone’s and I’ve heard a few people in the SE and SW zones have had to wait until 3 pref. points to draw a tag, but that isn’t consistent. Of the 3000 applicants you have to figure a good number of them are applying with 1 pref. point and are basically out of the mix.

Hey Whitetail, It is $10, I heard about it, but not a dollar figure. You can guarantee that will go up next year! I hunt in Zone 5 in the southern part of the state. I will see how long it takes, starting next year. Maybe we should make fishing licenses $425.00 for Iowa residents??

Try applying for a tag in the southern part of the state, thats where the biggest herds are. I don’t know but there might be more out of state archery liscenses available there. I can’t understand why they don’t let more archery tags go for out of staters, i think the percentage would be higher for doe kills and thats a big problem down there, another decent way to thin the doe’s.
