I just applied for my non-resident Iowa deer license this weekend. I could not believe it when it totaled $426.41. I guess when is enough enough?? I went on the Minnesota DNR website to see we charge $135.00. Maybe we should do what we do for archery licenses. It is reciprical, so you pay whatever your state charges. Good idea or bad??? The deer are so nice down there though .

June 5, 2006 at 3:03 am #17764Heck for 400.00 you could go buy an old beater car and come on down to Iowa and hit all the deer you want ! They are so thick I started keeping score. Couple years back I was 10-5-2 for the year Missed 10 braked hard for 5 and got 2.
Besides they don’t have a bag limit with autos !June 5, 2006 at 3:03 am #451353Heck for 400.00 you could go buy an old beater car and come on down to Iowa and hit all the deer you want ! June 5, 2006 at 11:53 am #17766They raised it a while ago, but they raised it again this year. It’s a tough hit on the pocket book, but if you are after big whitetails, Iowa is the place to be. I’m hoping this years price hike will turn some people off and make drawing a tag every year a possibility instead of a pipe dream.

June 5, 2006 at 1:30 pm #17767We don’t take kindly to out-of-staters coming into Iowa and killing one of our deer. If you are going to come please kill more than one deer. Then we will welcome you with open arms. I had no idea that it was that expensive to get out of state licenses in Iowa. I know the demand for Iowa tags has increased due to the number of trophy bucks in the state which is understandable but on the other hand I don’t want the state scaring potential deer hunters away with high-priced deer tags. Even with the added deer seasons and increased numbers of tags one can get every year the deer population still seems to be on the rise.

June 5, 2006 at 8:48 pm #17768With prices like that, I surely won’t be coming to that side of the river for deer Heck, I can get a quarter of a beef for that price AT $400+, you just as well save a few more bucks and head out West for a real deer

June 5, 2006 at 11:39 pm #17771Hey Wats,
Here is a non-real deer from Iowa that my uncle harvested two years ago(last time we were drawn). Just had a to give you a little crap We will see this year??June 5, 2006 at 11:39 pm #451597Hey Wats,
Here is a non-real deer from Iowa that my uncle harvested two years ago(last time we were drawn). Just had a to give you a little crap We will see this year??June 6, 2006 at 1:40 am #17775Theres quite a few like the first pic, not over run but a good chance in seeing one like him and maybe getting a shot at him. Theres more of bucks like the second picture but like both of these deer being around a few seasons thier smart, not impossible but smart. The smaller timbers that border the cornfields here and almost all of them are this size in iowa have alot of nice bucks in them. The chances of seeing a 160″ to a 170″ or better is pretty good and again thier smart and know thier lay of the land. Unless thier tired from running during the rut and are bedded down exhausted in these areas they will be on the lookout and its hard to get into thier area without being seen or smelled because of the size of the timbers. The ideal situation to hunt these areas is come a few days befor season opens and just sit and wait and watch, figure the area out befor going into it to hunt. Find the water and where thier feeding, weather its at night in the cornfields or in a close by alfalfa field at dusk or dawn. They lay along the cornfields in heavy brush or a thicket if they can find it and watch for doe’s and anything else that comes by. Iowa really is a good place to hunt for a nice wallhanger and theres plenty of big doe’s too. Alot of the big doe’s a guy can’t pull out by himself forsure.

June 6, 2006 at 1:51 am #17777I am just giving you Iowegians a hard time I got to see the biggest buck I have ever seen a couple years ago near Lansing. I also got to see a certain IDA member miss the buck with a muzzleloader I know there are big deer in Iowa, but I personally am not willing to pay the high price just to kill a mature buck. To tell you the truth, I still feel very guilty about the big buck on my wall. Don’t get me wrong, he didn’t die in vain. But, once I finally got a mature buck and it was laying dead on the ground, I questioned myself on whether I deserved to take this awesome animals life
Anyway, the NR tags are getting way out of range for the average Joe, including myself. I can go to NE or the Dakotas for cheaper and it would be more fun to chase Mulies in a totally different region. That is on my “Things to DO List”

June 6, 2006 at 12:44 pm #17787Don’t feel bad about that buck on your wall Wats, I felt the same ,thats human nature. I do think the liscenses here are pricy and to get the doe’s thinned out more to have better hunting they should have kept the prices where they were befor they raised them. I bought a black powder last year but didn’t get to go, this year im going too. Heres another situation, why dosen’t minn. and wisc. wait until after the rut to open gun season, it would help keep and spread the genes around better for nicer deer, just wondering.

June 6, 2006 at 10:58 pm #17802Wats, I will agree, on both points. I think everyone with a heart looks down and feels a bit bad when they see that awesome sight of a mature buck. I just think of all the times he outsmarted me and I never saw him or saw him high tailiing it away from me. I used to go to Iowa every year, but it is going to be a every 5 year thing now. It is not to bad of a trip because I have relatives with a house and private land to hunt so I am so tempted to go every year but there are other places to go. I also have relatives in North Dakota and I plan on deer hunting out there next year. Mossydan I think Minnesota does it because we have a herd of over a million deer. If we did not have it over rut we would harvest less deer. With all of the warm winters we have had lately we have not been able to harvest enough deer to keep the herd in check. Bad things can happen with a over abundance of deer. Car-Deer accidents, farming losses, and disease to name a few. I think they do it to keep their harvest numbers in check. And who wants to sit in a stand in northern Minnesota in December when it is 30 below zero, the first week in November is bad enough.

June 7, 2006 at 4:48 am #17909I didn’t know the deer herd was that size. Theres one heck of alot of them here too, hundereds of car accident every year with alot of people going to the hospitals. Im pretty sure they have extra kill zones there now right? Maybe when they thin the herds out they can open it later but your right about the cold. It dosen’t get that cold that early or intense here so i can see why. Maybe an early antlerless season of some length instead of a week only to thin them out then a later eighter sex after the rut, that would help in alot of areas. Two season times, one for the thinning and the other for bigger deer that would eventually come in a few years, maybe that would work, i can see where it would. They have an early doe season here befor the rut, then seasons after the rut for the bucks and doe’s, then after thats over they have another thining season. It helps keep the deer better in check but far from being in check and still helps the bucks get bigger too.

June 12, 2006 at 2:49 am #17922On noooo, you shot it with a shot-gun though-…shoot them with a bow, that is the challenge! No, I am just kidding, I couldn’t get a shot at my buck this year with a bow… And I hunted really hard!
Watch the “Iowa” jokes Mike!!!
