WAUSAU — About one-third of Wisconsin needs the contentious regulation requiring deer hunters to shoot an antlerless deer before they could kill a coveted buck next fall, according to a recommendation from state wildlife experts.

The Natural Resources Board has been asked to designate 21 deer management units located mostly in the Fox River Valley and in west-central Wisconsin as earn-a-buck zones for the fall hunt, said Keith Warnke, a big game specialist for the state Department of Natural Resources

I hunt WI for the 1st gun season. I would vote for something like that in a heartbeat!!

After last years opening day losing count around 80 skinheads walking under my stand. I got mad and filled out out all my tags with does.

Our land buts up to a trophy managment area where the farmers will only kill a buck that has over eight points. They will not kill does. Which this hunter thinks is totaly wrong.

Some people are not meat hunters and I am! What a better way to fill the freezer. Cub and Rainbow have nothing that even compares to the price and the fun of processing your own.

I understand the purpose of it, but being a bowhunter I don’t like it. Having to qualify for a buck tag during bow season, hunters are shooting at does in mid september. Some of the shots they wouldn’t otherwise take and bad hits are made. With the temps in the 70s, the meat is spoiled by the time the deer is recovered. Also, the early T zone falls at the onset of prime rut. I believe heavy hunting pressure during the early T zone results in more breeding activity being nocturnal in the first week of Nov.

Sgt. Rock…I like that one alot better! You’re still controlling (or attempting to control) the herd and not really messing up the rut!

Dont forget if you shot a doe last year you will automatically have a buck tag for this year. I will agree that the oct. hunt screws up bowhunting.

a good shot and your deer is dead in 40 minutes anyways if you let it lay, so there is no time for spoiling of the meat. Shooting a doe is not as difficult as shooting that buck you want anyways. I agree that the t-zone screws up the rut, but if everybody did there job on deer management we wouldn’t be in this situation.

Hey, get the WDNR to pay for the meat processing and I’ll shoot as many as they want me too!

I haven’t checked if the zone I hunt in is going to be affected yet. But, if it is, I will not be too unhappy about it. This last year other people finally shot some does, thank you This area is ovverun with does and fawns. I will take any extra deer you guys have I didn’t deer hunt as much last year as normal and I am already about out of venison With a family of 6, we go through at least 5 deer a year. Last year I only got 2

Hey Wats, where do you get your deer processed? I go to Gunderson’s in Mondovi…they’ve done a good job for me over the years!

Dartman-I process all my deer at home I can usually handle 2 a day before my back gets tired We cut steaks, cube stew meat, roasts, and grind for hamburger. I do all the cutting, the wife does the grinding, and the kids love to bag/wrap/label the meat. It works pretty slick
