Wall Tent for Deer Hunts

Does anyone here own a wall tent that they use for deer hunting? I’m pretty serious about getting one of these from Davis Tent in Colorado, but I can’t make up my mind on which size to get…is 10×12 big enough for two guys to hunt out of, or should I go to the 12×14? It will cost about $220 more to go to the larger tent plus I think I’ll have to go one size larger on the woodstove…that’s another $50. Anyone got a 10×12? How’s it work for two people?

I am assuming you are talking about the white heavy canvas wall tents? If so, a 10×12 is pretty decent for 2 guys. We use to use a couple wall tents for our yearly fishing trip in the mountains of Colorado.
You want the tent to be big enough to be comfortable, but if you go too big, it is harder to keep it at a comfortable temp. Depending on just how much gear you have, I am guessing it will be alright. If you set the cots across from each other on the 12 foot side and have the stove toward the back, you can then have the walkway with a makeshift table. But, I guess that would depend on where they put the hole for the wood stove stack also.

How are you getting the tent into your camping site? truck or horseback? if in the truck go bigger. just remember with the canvas wall tents they don’t shed snow very well. I can tell you from many years of elk hunting, as little as 6″ of snow over night will leave you with very, very little head room when you get up in the morning.

    AmWatson-
Thanks for the info! I’ll see if they can move the placement of the stove jack. If they can, I think the 10×12 would work great. Maybe if I’m lucky I can stoke the stove without getting out of the bag?!?

I actually don’t have far to pack the tent. From where I park, my campsite is about a 1/4 mile…most of which is by canoeing across a large beaver swamp. If it’s froze I just use a sled, but it’s never froze when I go in late October for my annual weeklong bowhunt. As for the snow, well, I’m counting on two things. One, that it doesn’t snow too heavily. And two, that if it does, the internal frame will help to give the tent decent support. I guess time will tell as this mode of camp is all new to me! Thanks for helping out.

I have the 16×20 wall tent from Davis for my elk camp. I also have a big blue tarp that covers it out past the rope stakes that helps shed snow and keeps water well out past the wall sides. I opted for their frame to simple and easy set up and holds up great. My 16×20 will hold at least 10 guys watching movies with chairs as well as being set up for 4 guys sleeping. If I knew how to post pics I’d post some of the inside. Only thing I should have done and didn’t was to get the full floor, I only got the 3/4 version. Think my total when I got mine in 2000 was right at $1100 to my door. Best investment I ever made for camp.

we have the 16×20 with the aluminum frame all from cabelas that thing works great i made a double barrel wood burner for it we have been in it in the worst condistions from pouring rian with a river running through the middle of it, to heavy snow. it is very heavy and the frame is too the worst part is packing it in. so the size we have works for us and with the stove we have we can get it hot in there they do hold the heat well if you bank the sides with snow or leaves the extra room is nice but that is extra weight so keep that in mind
    good luck.

    Shaley-

I wondered about getting a floor in mine, Davis pretty much talked me out of it. They say it adds weight. They also told me that if there’s some snow when I set it up to just shovel it off down to the ground and after a day of running the stove it would be dry ground inside. I think not having a floor would be a nice option for bath-time…stay inside where it’s warm! I’m leaning towards no floor and maybe just a piece of carpet infront of the cot, is there any reason I should reconsider and get the full floor? Thanks for your insight!

My floor isnt sewn in so I have the option of using it or not, I think it just helps keeping things cleaner in the tent. You can always just use a tarp to.
