Only two days left of the bow season so I went out this morning and sat in my blind. Boy was it raining out. I had a good size doe come in about 6:30 this morning but it was before legal hours and it was plenty dark out. About 7:20 two other deer showed up and a nubbin buck made the mistake of sticken around too long. Dropped it in its tracks. Must have hit shoulder blade and the arrow must of angled up into the spine. Used up my last zone T tag and now I’m heading out hoping to fill my regular bow tag. With a lot of luck maybe a larger buck will show up this evening. I see some huge tracks around but haven’t saw the buck yet. He did reopen a scrape though. I thought it was a bit late for that but oh well. Good luck to all that’s still hunting.

Just curious, does Wisconsin’s bow-season always go into January? What’s usually the last day?

Good Luck getting that big buck in “crunch time”. There’s bound to be atleast one left over for ya!

Since the inception of the special T-zone hunts in October and December, bowhunters lost some days to harvest a buck with a bow. So, the DNR gave us until Jan.3 to compromise with the bowhunter’s

Didn’t the season usually end the last day of Dec. I may be wrong and it wouldn’t be the first time. Still not sure if it’s fair, add eight days of zone T hunting and only add 3 days to bow season. Something just doesn’t add up. I suppose if their trying to lower the deer population more get shot with a gun those days than by bows. It would be interesting to know the numbers.

You are correct, it used to be that it ended on Dec. 31 Taking 8 days away from the bow hunters and giving them 3 days back is the DNR’s way of compromising I think when they first started the T-zone hunts, they had good turnouts and that resulted in decent harvest reports. Now, with the addition of EAB and the T-Zones, hunters are getting tired of it and not participating as much.
It doesn’t really affect me to much I guess. If I was a bow hunter only, it probably would upset me. But, since I gun hunt as well, I just use the T-zone as a warm-up round for the regular season

I’m not very educated on this question I’m about to ask, BUT here it goes.

Is it true you can not BOW Hunt during the rifle season?????

If the answer is yes (which I think it is), What is the DNR or logical resoning for this????? Thanks for your help. Don’t mean to stir the pot for anyone, just wanting to hear the resoning behind this !

Good question Rob. I usually have a stack of all the fishing and hunting regulation books in my desk, but for some reason the deer hunting one is not here
I will see if I can dig anything up on that. I can’t see a legitimate reason why you couldn’t, of course it would be obvious you would need to wear orange
I wouldn’t think this would stir the pot any

I agree Wats, wear orange during the Gun season just like in MN. But why can’t you bow hunt during the WI gun season???

I looked on the online regulations, but couldn’t find anywhere where it says you can or cannot Of course the book is a mile long and full of CWD rules I wish I could find my paper copy, it is much easier to read than the Adobe copy

You cannot bowhunt during the regular 9 day season, except for in the CWD units. I dont know why.

I’m not sure of the reason behind it either, but Iowa and Missouri both close down their archery seasons during the regular firearms season too. Good question Rob.

This is true, Rob. You are unable to bowhunt during the regular gun season in Wisconsin. I don’t know why you can’t but I care not too. Don’t want to get shot I suppose.
I did bowhunt in the Red Wing, Mn. area during gun season when I lived over there.
I remember watching a Mong shot a red squirrel with a shotgun just under my bowstand before gun season one year. He didn’t even have to clean after that either!

Just to clarify, before the inception of the T-Zone you used to have to quit bow hunting the week before the gun season. Now they let you bow hunt until the Thursday before leaving Friday as the calm before the storm. Thus 4 days + 3 days = 7 Days additional bow hunting in exchange for 8 days of T-Zone. Still take away some great bow hunting end of Oct.

    Oops, you are right LazyEyez
But, I also think that had a lot to do with letting the bowhunters have a few more days to hunt to help with the reduction of the herd. This all started when we had (and still do) way too many deer around. The DNR was looking for anyway they could to get people to harvest deer and especially does. But, since we have so many die hard buck only hunters, the situation will never end. People still do not understand that QDM also means harvesting DOES

I would just like to hear the DNR’s reasoning for closing BowHunting during this time. Bow Hutning durin gthis time would be no different than if I were to sit in my stand with a gun. In MN& ND you are allowed to do it, as long as you satisfy the safety orange requirements. As someone posted above and my thoughts exactly, that is some awful good days to be bowhunting during that period. Yes there is a greater risk of being shot (no different than if I had a gun though?????, Yet those gun hunters and the rut have those deer up and moving all day long. Makes for good all day sits. I was always curious to this rule. HTanks for everyone insight and let me know if anyone finds this answer out to the reasoninig. I’m off Friday to ND for their last weekend of the bow season. I have 2 tags to fill, either sex tag and a anterless tag. Come 9:00 Sunday those does better watch out I’m letting Mr. Carbon fly and will be doing drives all day until I get one. I will for sure trying to fill one, perhaps two if I can find someone up there that wants the meat. My freezer is already full Good Luck to anyone else out there still chasing Mr. Big
