I shot this deer today. It is a decent buck, I missed one, no kidding twice this big yesterday. Oh well. I had four bucks I patterned this year while bowhunting, and no kidding again, this is the smallest of the four. But I never got a shot until I was gun hunting.

December 5, 2005 at 3:50 am #12889Yes, it was very cold, supposed to be even colder tomorrow morning, but I think our group is gonna go at it again. One thing nice about the cold, is they aren’t so eager to get out of bed and run really fast.

December 5, 2005 at 2:23 pm #12903dan- I was sitting in the timber, walked by at twenty yards, and that was it. He was all by himself.
G- yeah I know, it is a nice problem, lol. But I still haven’t ate food, in more than a day, after I missed the big boy, I am still sick. Whats even worse, I had five shots at him at fifty yards. He didn’t know what was going on and just kept standing and milling around. HE WAS INVINCIBLE, I haven’t missed deer in the past four years. One shot, and they go down, just like the one picture, which makes it five years running. WHY I keep asking myself, did I miss on the record buck? Any thoughts guys? I am sane, believe me, but I swear he is invincible.December 5, 2005 at 2:23 pm #401256dan- I was sitting in the timber, walked by at twenty yards, and that was it. He was all by himself.

December 5, 2005 at 4:22 pm #12913Lizard, did you take out the force field before you tried to take down that beast with the guns. You need to send a SAS missle to take out the nucleus of the force field before you switch over to guns and finish him off.
I hear you. Everyone says those big boys are smart, but I also believe they need to get lucky once or twice a year. Cause you know in your mind there is no reason why you should’ve missed him. Sorry to hear about missing but that is a beauty with some character to boot! Congrats

December 5, 2005 at 10:39 pm #12958Luke its definately buck fever. When you get a huge one like that and you’ve drawn back remember to clear the mind first. I imiagine a single spot right where i want to hit about the size of a ping pong ball, why a small spot like that? because it takes more concentration to think of a small spot thus taking my mind off his rack and i concentrate on that spot making it turn white, thats where i want to hit him. It works for me to quite looking at the rack and concentrate on that single spot or i’ll shake or torque the handle on bow more than likely. I find my yardage, pull the bow back and concentrate on that spot only, then release and drive home the bacon. If im looking at his rack or can’t calm down i might as well be shooting at the moon. I try to blank everything out and try to hit that spot. Its diffrent for everybody but this works for me. I black out everything except where i want my arrow to hit. Have you filled your bow tag yet or is this buck with your bowtag or shotgun.

December 6, 2005 at 3:49 am #12969Ripper- “I don’t know what happened up there, I just got so scared” (merlin-topgun) Anyways, I haven’t missed bucks four years running, then miss the big boy, and then get the one pictured. HE WAS INVINCIBLE it wasn’t buck fever!! No, maybe it was, I have never seen a buck this big, it literally looked like an elk. It would be some sort of record, sure of that.
Mossydan- This was a shotgun kill, I still have my bow tag, and I am group hunting, with five other guys, so somebody may still get a shot at the big boy. My dad shot one on the same day I did, we tracked it for a while with good blood, then it started snowing like a mn blizzard, and the tracks were instantly covered. It is dissapointing and hard on me to not find a deer that I have watched grow for many years. My dad described the buck’s horns to me that he shot, and I know exactly which one of the five he is, so I feel for him too(lots bigger than this). I looked for him all day today, but he must not have been mortally wounded. Frustrating, I will keep looking though. The joys and sorrows of an amazing animal.
