Ok, so I finally getting around to posting some pics of my last ND excursion.

The first pic here is the buck that I and my buddy Paul have been chasing all Fall. This pic does not do this buck justice but you get the drift. This buck was taken by Paul’s neighbor from a hay field at the top of the hill South from Paul’s house (.5 miles). That is the farthest North we have heard the buck has been. This guy shot him with a rifle as he was driving by and saw 2 bucks fighting out in the cut hay field on the go road. This buck pictured was tangling with a giant 5×5 and had kicked the 5×5 over the paved road and was making his way back to tend the hot doe that started this whole fight this is when this guy took advantage of having permission to hunt the hay field that this bruiser was now standing in. The guy said this buck could not even pick his head up from the exhaustion of fighting the 5×5. As he lined him up in his scope he whistled to get him to stop, but the buck still hung his head as he looked down the barrel of the guys rifle. The guy shot and the buck went around 75 yards where it expired. The guy knew he was a big buck , but had no idea the magnitude of the deer he just harvested until he walked up on him and saw the junk hanging off and the deer’s head was propped so high off the ground from one of the stickers that had dug itself into the ground.

It was a very sad time for myself and especially Paul , who has spent countless hours scouting this deer since first seeing him last Winter. It was guessed that this deer was in the 150″ class last year. Stacie and I had this Deer @ about 5-6 yards on Halloween morning if I recall right. Only able to gather enough light to see him with the binocs to identify him. I watched him walk away as my heart was a thumping and that familiar sick feeling hit my stomach . The deer that we thought was a 20 point buck actually had 22 scorable points. I say had, cause he had busted off a 7-8″ brow tine that had a total of 4 scorable points on it. From the sounds of the battle this buck had just before being harvested, I would not doubt it if it was laying in that Hayfield . This buck has been green scored @ 179 and some odd inches as a non typical. . We guess he lost over 10 ” with the busted brow tine and had a base 5×5 frame

Man when I saw this rack the other weekend I was amazed and sadden all at the same time. But I know he got his chance to spread his genetics around the last 2 years. Truly a monster buck that I will never forget pursuing and having that encounter with Halloween morning of 05 ! Congrats to my buddies neighbor( I forgot his name)

The Saturday I was up there I spent the day being a bird dog for my buddies buddy Rick on the last weekend of ND rifle season. We were hunting the same area from where I posted a picture group of 5 bucks taken on the opening weekend of ND season. All pretty impressive bucks. It was a great crisp morning as Paul and I road hunted on the way up trying to fill a doe tag with his Rifle in a particular Zone on the way to our destination. After a good stalk on a small buck and a doe bedded down that I had spotted from the road on un-posted land, only to be busted by the wind and unsuccessful. We got to our destination around 9 am only to find a shooter buck on top of a hill. After glassing him we decided to track down Rick (the only guy with a buck tag). After watching the buck run off we looked back and hidden by the topography was a group of 2 bucks and 6 does. These bucks were dogging a couple of the does and standing each other off. Never fighting but close.. After getting Rick these deer had moved back into the small shelter belt, where we got the spotting scope out and judge the one deer in the 160-170 class . After making a plan and watch it unfold to a T, Rick had gun trouble as the Buck followed the hot doe only 2 more belts down. I ran back for the truck and laid the next plan out. As Paul and I capped the shelter belt Rick walked into the wind down the belt towards us. Again this Buck was not leaving the DOE for nothing . They get to the end of the belt and spot us and stop. Again Rick has gun trouble as Paul and I watch the 16-170 class buck and doe tear off. We hop back into the truck and try to head them off on the next section line. Well that is just the beginning of the day and mainly how the next few hours went. I ended up seeing 7 shooter bucks (130″ or better), Rick missed a few long shots and the end of the day was coming near. When we made a final last push of a piece they know fairly well and Rick had seen a decent deer go into that morning. The plan worked out to a T again, as Rick shot this 5×6 at about 15 yards . We took pics just as the sun was setting.

I saw some awesome bucks and have decided to put in next year for ND rifle as Rick invited me back next year . The funny thing is this buck and the group of 5 bucks previous were all taken on Non Posted or Public land !

Congrats Rick on an nice buck

Here is a picture of a 5×5 that was taken off my buddy Pauls land on Rifle opening weekend, by the former land owners daughter Tammy Graff. My buddy Paul passed on this deer with his bow on that Haloween weekend I was up there. This deer Green nets in the 127″ range.
