My good buddy and I headed to his In-Laws farm this weeked for the gun opener. 200 acres of land. 3 hunters. Me, My Buddy, and his brother in law (20 some years old).

Now I was under the impression that if it was brown, it was down. BUT I WAS WRONG!!! APPARENTLY, my buddy’s brother in-law believes in not harvesting any does b/c it will make the bucks stay there.

This guy really thinks he is practicing QDM!!!

I tried explaining that Nutrition and Genetics are the main thing. By reducing the doe population, it allows for the Better Genetic Bucks to reproduce. And two many doe’s around, it provides opportunity for poor genetic bucks to reproduce. etc etc

The actual landowners of this farm (the parents) already said they didn’t care what was taken. But i’m in a rock and a hard place here since it isn’t my land. My buddy could care less what the brother thinks, and he drops a doe anyway sunday morning.

The brother comes over to see what was shot, and when he found out it was a doe, he got pi$$ed. Starts swearing and what not, but the best part was when he said, and i quote….”You’ve just ruined my hunting for the next 3 years”

The weekend was a wash, because i was hoping to at least fill the freezer, and had opportunity to shoot at least 50-60 doe’s..I only saw 3 bucks (1 monster-no shot)….Anyway, I can tell the buck to doe ratio is way off, and i’ve never met anyone in my life that “claims” to be a hunter, but yet be so far wrong their views. (not opinion….fact)

Needless to say i’ll be finding another place to hunt…as will my buddy…it’s not worth it.

Let him hunt that land!!! He will find out in a couple of years that your right ,once he sees nothing but imature bucks with a boat load of does and fawns!! He will then realize that he needs to some QDM!!!! I am sure he will call you back to help thin the herd!!!

Unfortunately there are still guys out there from the old school days who believe in not shooting does. Maybe if we get some good replies here with facts on buck to doe ratio’s you could send him the link and show him he is wrong. One good source of info would be Bluffland Whitetails Association

We have all kinds of those “QDM” types around here. They need to read the QDM principles a bit. They babble endlessly about guys not passing up enough bucks, but then won’t shoot does if they were paid. I just laugh listening to their armchair biology.

I did my part this weekend. Passed on 3 “2 1/2 year old” bucks, which was kinda tough for me and shot a big ole doe.

I just say shoot what makes you happy. You guys shooting those does will likely do nothing but improve the guys herd.

“and had opportunity to shoot at least 50-60 doe’s..I only saw 3 bucks (1 monster-no shot)…”

I must live wrong. I’ve spent the last 25 years hunting Northern St. Louis county, MN and I doubt I’ve seen 60 deer TOTAL over that time. In fact I know I haven’t. I can’t imagine what it must be like hunting deer when there are Deer running around all over the place. According to my notes, I averaged 150 hours of sitting in the stand for every time I saw a deer up there. All I can say is wow.

    Slop,

There’s mountians of literature out there for educating people on QDM. Maybe in your spare time, print out some of it for him to read. Education is the key and apparently, he isn’t very educated in QDM.

Yelling and arguing isn’t going to be constructive to the issue. Proving him wrong through text and print will be most beneficial.

Yep, print out the info and let him read it.

We have the same problem in my neck of the woods…….What makes it worse, is that every Tom, Dick, & Harry are so dang quick to shoot basket 6 and 8 pointers that are 1.5 to 2.5 years old, but will NOT shoot a doe.

Guess it makes them feel better and stronger to sit in the local tavern saying: “I got my buck!!!”

slop, tell him to pull up this thread and read. he’s only hurting his chances at a mature buck, by not keeping the herd in check. too many does, hence offspring, will wreak havoc on the land, keeping bucks out, except for the short rut time.

My buddy sent him some documentation on QDM facts, methods, etc..etc…

From what I saw of this kid this weekend, it will probably just pi$$ him off.

    His loss I guess….

I see everyone beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing. Print out the literature and give it to him. He may not read in now, or in the next few months but eventually he will and will understand. That is how we started. It is still a hard sell to some of our own crew, even when they see the big bucks we are harvesting. It is catching on though.

Another important thing to remember boys, not shooting the does and keeping the herd in check, you will have more deer on your proprty than your property can provide food for(not good). Thus these does are taking away vital food and important nutrition that your bucks need. Especailly at this time of year, so the bucks can replenish their strength, etc after the rut. We have been blessed the last half dozen years or so with having mild Winters, that is part of the reason for the implosion of big bucks these last few years IMO. These bucks come out of Winter, fairly strong and helathy, so during PEak growing times these bucks have been healthy and sprouting some good inches. If we have a doozy Winter, these areas with overpopulation could take a big toll on the heard and the health of these bucks that do make it through a tough Winter. Making there summer food replinish strength, health etc. instead of growing these massive racks

Slop there was a post earlier this year that was some great reads about QDM. Try to find it. If anyone else can, please link it here!

Since I must be from “old school” (last time I went deer hunting it was the second year of bucks only). It would be helpful to have a link on this site.

I don’t even know what “QVC” is..thought it was a shopping network.

Educate, educate, educate…….and if all else fails, educate some more. There are tons of examples of how it’s being done right. Keep at it Slop……and good luck.
